This year’s best bacon roll so far is at once familiar and surprising. It’s not the standard rashers-trapped-in-bread experience, but rather a pastry, with ribbons of maple-soaked bacon snaking around croissant dough in what looks like a pain au raisin, or a particularly attractive snail shell. The maple bacon croissant is the work of Pophams Bakery, a new cafe in Islington. They have frequently sold out by 10am. Pictured Pophams Bakery owner Ollie Gold with Maple bacon croissants.

GALLERY SHOWING WORK BY CONTROVERSIAL MUSLIM ARTIST VANDALISED

A London gallery hosting the first solo exhibition of controversial Muslim artist Sarah Maple has been vandalised.

Several windows at the Salon Gallery had to be replaced today after they were smashed from having rocks thrown at them.

Maple, who was brought up as a Muslim, has been described as the new Tracey Emin and has provoked controversy with her work.

Her exhibition earlier this year at Rolling Stone Wood's gallery caused outrage for depicting Muslim women in provocative poses, including one suggestively sucking on a banana.

The headline picture of the artist's new show, "This Artist Blows", is 'Haram' , which shows Maple wearing a Hijab and cradling a pig.

Maple comments: "I would like there to be a bigger place for western Muslims in the arts. It's difficult though, we live in scary times.

"I don't pray five times a day but I try to live a good, spiritual life and be kind to people... It may seem like a fairytale but I believe in a spiritual Islam where I have 100% faith in Allah which is more important then sticking to all of the rules which you simply cannot do in the west and successfully integrate".

A spokesman for Salon has commented that: "She [Maple] doesn't intend to offend anyone but simply wants to pose questions about Muslim culture and identity."

However, if the gallery's windows are any indication, there are some people who are obviously not happy that these questions are being posed.
