Water Good Idea: The Floating Mini Car
Mini are making a splash with their new model - a floating car.
The car brand tested their buoyant special edition of the diminutive in Cambridge, Massachusetts, prior to the Head of the Charles Regatta (HOCR), which was held on the weekend.
Aside from the rowing competitors, the Mini boat was to be the only vessel on the race course, which is three miles long between the Boston University Boathouse to Christian Herter Park. It was operated by a member of the HOCR River Control Committee to monitor the safety of the rowers.
The convertible boat, which is powered by a 6 hp outboard motor, was built as part of Mini USA's annual Motor-Tober activities, where Mini takes over the month of October to celebrate all that is fun about the brand.
This year's program is called the Not Normal Sales Event, and this one-of-a-kind boat was the Mini USA Eastern Region's interpretation of 'Not Normal'.
"We challenged our regional staff and the dealers in their respective areas to identify 'Not Normal' ways to celebrate this Motor-Tober by engaging the Mini community and demonstrate why it's an exciting brand family to be part of," said Tom Salkowsky, Marketing Manager - Mini USA. "The Mini USA Eastern Region has created the perfect example of what the Motor-Tober Not Normal Sales Event is all about with the MINI Convertible boat."
Fred Schoch, executive director of the HOCR event, said: "We are pleased and excited to support Mini in this creative activation strategy and look forward working with them this weekend. We have never before allowed a company to float a car on the Charles during racing."

Supersize Spaniel Slims Down To Win Pet Fat Fighters Competition
*STRICTLY EMBARGOED UNTIL 00.01 Thursday 4th October 2012*
A dog whose former nickname was 'Jumbo Jack' has been crowned the UK's pet slimming champ for 2012 after shedding nearly one third of his bodyweight.
The seven-year-old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and 16 other pets have undergone a physical transformation as part of a six month diet and fitness regime run by veterinary charity PDSA.
At the beginning of the competition the Spaniel tipped the scales at 20.5kg - double his ideal weight - and six months on has lost a remarkable 6.4kg, which is 31% of his bodyweight and bringing him to a far healthier 14.1kg- trimming 20cm off his waist.
Owner Rose Welsh, 52, adopted the already super-sized Spaniel back in January of this year, she said: "When Jack first came to us he was morbidly obese and could barely walk.
"I couldn't bear to see him in such a sad state so I took him to the vet to talk about a diet and fitness plan.
"Today he is a different dog and we call him Jumping Jack instead of Jumbo Jack, as he jumps every time he barks now. He is fit, healthy and happy - everything a pet should be - and we are absolutely thrilled."
Jack had been overfed and hardly exercised prior to being adopted by Rose, which had caused him to become deaf, as the extra fat blocked his ear canals. He struggled to walk more than a few steps, couldn't play and couldn't even bark.
PDSA Senior Veterinary Surgeon, Sean Wensley, added: "Having adopted a seriously overweight animal, Rose has done a wonderful job in managing Jack's food intake and safely increasing his exercise. As for Jack, he undoubtedly feels much fitter and happier, and has a greater life expectancy t...

Mini Olympians: Remote Control Cars Will Retrieve Games Equipment
No, your eyes are not deceiving you, the London 2012 games will see small remote control cars retrieving javelins, discuses, hammers and shots back from the field to the throwing area.
The 'Mini MINIs' are roughly a quarter scale of the full-sized car and will carry the athletic equipment situated inside, accessible through the adapted sunroof.
Operated by staff especially trained for the duty, the electric cars are blue and feature the same Games livery, the same as the 160 full-size official fleet vehicles, composed of 160 BMW 1 Series ActiveE models and 40 MINI E's, used for duties including shuttling athletes and officials within the Olympic Park and surrounding Games sites.
BMW was asked to specially develop the radio controlled cars to ferry equipment from the field of play to save valuable time during competition.
"The MINI team was thrilled to be given this challenge to develop a vehicle with such an important and high profile role during the Olympic and Paralympic Games," commented Dr Juergen Hedrich, Managing Director of MINI Plant Oxford. "I know that everybody was inspired by the challenge and the knowledge that these models will be seen in action by millions of people around the world."
The cars were designed and built to a specification agreed with LOCOG to ensure their role on the field of play is successful in saving time during competition. Each of the three Mini MINIs will cover around 6,000 metres per day in four-hour shifts across nine days of Olympic and nine days of Paralympic competition.
The Mini MINIs will:
1.Carry a load of up to 8kg; a single hammer, discus or shot or two javelins
2.Be opera...
