    QATAR : Doha ( illustration )
In May 2009, Qatar placed a bid for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, seeking to bring the event to the region for the first time. Qatar - also known as the State of Qatar - is an Arab emirate in the Middle East occupying the small Qatar Peninsula on the northeasterly coast of the larger Arabian Peninsula. It is bordered by Saudi Arabia to the south. Otherwise, the Persian Gulf surrounds the state. A strait of the Persian Gulf separates Qatar from the relatively-nearby island nation of Bahrain. Qatar is an oil-and gas-rich nation with the third largest gas reserves and the second highest GDP per capita in the world. Doha is the capital city of the State of Qatar. BALTIC STATES : Latvia ( illustration )
The Town Hall Square in downtown Riga, Latvia ( with St. Peter's Church in the background ). Riga's historical centre has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Baltic States are three countries in Northern Europe - Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania -, all members of the European Union. After World War II, the three countries were considered to be under Soviet occupation by the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, NATO, and many other countries and international organizations. The struggle of the Baltic States to regain independence contributed to the collapse of the Soviet Union since they were the first of the many Soviet socialist republics to secede. The national sovereignty of each of these Baltic countries was restored in 1991 and the last Russian troops and other military forces withdrew permanently from the Baltic States in August of 1994. Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania have been members of both the European Union and the NATO since 2004. Today, the three countries are liberal democracies and their market economies in recent years have undergone rapid expansion ; however, they were hard-hit by the financial crisis of 2007*2010.
