CHINA: Life returns to normal in Xinjiang after July riots
Children pose with Chinese special security police on Pingding Hill in Urumqi, the capital of the autonomous Xinjiang region in China. Funding for public security in the area will nearly double in 2010 following the violent July 5th riots in 2009. The region has a large population of ethnic minorities - the largest being the Uyghurs - a Turkic-speaking, predominantly Muslim ethnic group. Official figures state that 197 people were killed and more than 1,700 were injured in the July 5th riots between the Uyghurs and the dominant Chinese ethnic group, the Hans. Grande Borne has been classed as a 'Zone Urbaine Sensible' by French authorities - this means it is a high-priority for government funding and development. The area has a high level of urban violence and unrest. On April 7th, a gang of youths armed with stones and bats set upon a bus in the area and lit it on fire.
