19 people on a fairground ride had to be rescued by firefighters after the ride malfunctioned, leaving them stuck and hanging in ten capsules 20 metres in the air. Firefighters were called just before 6pm and used two Ariel ladder Platform (ALPs) appliances which are like cherry pickers to bring the passengers back to the ground.
Fire crews rescue people from Southbank fairground ride, London, UK - 31 Jul 2016
Crews used an aerial ladder platform which is a bit like a cherry picker to reach the people and bring them back down. It was slow work as we need to access each cage on the ride individually and ensure they were secure before we move them from the ride onto our platform and bring them back down to the ground. There were no injuries and everyone was patiently waiting for us to get around to them.
"While everyone was very relieved to be back on the ground everyone was very calm."
Crews also worked with the onsite engineer to manually release the ride?s ?friction break? so the ride could turn around and align the pods with the aerial ladder platform.
The Brigade was called at 1755 and the incident was over at 2122.
