A planet orbiting a distant star has caused a stink amongst scientists — because it apparently reeks of bad eggs.
The exoplanet was already infamous for its deadly weather but has been hiding another bizarre feature.
A team from the USA’s Johns Hopkins University using data from US space agency NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope have detected trace amounts of hydrogen sulphide.
It gives off a stench but also offers scientists new clues about how sulphur, a building block of planets, might influence the insides and atmospheres of gas worlds beyond the solar system.
The hydrogen sulphide was found in the atmosphere of the Jupiter-sized planet named, HD 189733.
The planet is about 13 times closer to its star than Mercury is to the Sun in our Solar System.
It is 64 light-years from Earth and was discovered in 2005.
It takes about two Earth days to complete an orbit.
It has scorching temperatures of 925 C and is notorious for vicious weather, including raining glass that blows sideways on winds of over 8,000 km/h.

Fast food chain McDonald’s has caused a stink with new billboards — that smell of the restaurant’s iconic fries.
The advertising installed in the Dutch city of Amsterdam does not carry the company name but does come in the firm’s iconic red and yellow colours.
They also have strategically placed circular holes.
They contain hidden compartments with French fries inside heated by an internal ventilation system which also blew the aroma out through the holes.
The company claimed any noses within a five-metre radius would get a waft of the popular burger side.

Researchers say they have developed two devices to bring smells to virtual world’s such as the metaverse.
One is a wearable odour generator that in prototype form fits on the upper lip just under the nose the other is in the form of a mask.
While current VR headsets can simulate vision, sound, and touch, virtual worlds are still largely odourless.
The first type can create two scents while the latter can create up to nine scents.
Both contain scented wax that can be heated in about 1.44 seconds to release the desired scent in a localised area.
The researchers from Beihang University in China and the City University of Hong Kong were able to generate 30 different scents.
These included the herb rosemary, mojito, pancake, pineapple, and ginger.
Another was the foul smelling fruit of the durian plant which has been described as the stench of raw sewage or rotting flesh.

Who needs perfume? These new-wave products make your hair smell like wet herbs, roses and candles
Scented hairsprays are competing with fine fragrance Ð and starting to make perfumes look like poor value.
When is a perfume not a perfume? When itÕs a hairspray so thoughtfully scented that a waft of lacquer could legitimately pass for fine fragrance.
Perfumed haircare is on the rise.

‘The soundtrack to my life was burping and farting’: how disgusting is your partner? Living and working in the same space has given many couples an unwanted insight into each other’s dirtiest habits. But should we really find them so gross?
BAD HABITS: FART.

'It's terrifying': the English village overwhelmed by landfill stink. For miles around Walleys Quarry in Silverdale, people have reported waking up in the night struggling to breathe.
'It's terrifying': the English village overwhelmed by landfill stink.A stop the stink message painted on a house in Silverdale, Staffordshire. Local residents say they are being "poisoned in their own homes" due to a stench coming from the nearby Walleys Quarry landfill site which the local MP Aaron Bell says is causing an "environmental disaster" by releasing unprecedented levels of hydrogen sulphide gas.
