Animal Ancestors pet portraits, America - Jul 2009

Animal Ancestor Pet Portraits
ANIMAL ANCESTOR PET PORTRAITS
Dogs are usually counted as part of the family - but here's some hounds that are real animal ancestors.
Artist Valerie Leonard is giving pet lovers the chance to have their furry friend immortalised in a classical painting - as if they were family members from history.
The pet portraits see four-legged friends cleverly incorporated into pictures you might expect to see in a stately home.
Some dogs - and a few cats - have morphed into historical figures such as Henry VIII, Queen Victoria and more than a few noble men and women from history.
But Valerie, a Brit living in Connecticut, doesn't simply paste pictures together, her work involves painstaking attention to detail to get the animal and portrait components to match - even making doggy clothing to help the pictures seamlessly blend.
She explains: "I discovered that other people have attempted this art form but none that I have seen have taken it to the extremes that I do. I often spend as long as a week perfecting a piece.
"I choose the painting to suit the animal subject and frequently create completely new backgrounds to better offset furry faces.
"I often change or even create new clothing to suit the proportions or colouring of the animal ancestor who inhabits it.
"Taking elements from other paintings by the same artist to better balance an image, I attempt to make my work seamless so that it is, hopefully, impossible to see the merging of one image to another.
"I challenge anyone to find work that is as conscientiously 'seamless' and personal as mine."
Valerie creates the portraits for people who want to give a novel gift or remember a departed pet.

Tragic Marilyn's Final Possessions Up for Sale
TRAGIC MARILYN'S FINAL POSSESSIONS UP FOR SALE
A rare sale of Marilyn Monroe's personal possessions will feature a robe purported to be the last item of clothing she wore.
The assembled items include clothing from her personal and professional wardrobe and furniture from her Brentwood, California hacienda style home.
The items offer a rare glimpse into the personal life of the tragic legend who resided in the Brentwood home until her death.
Among over 150 items offered for sale is a white terry cloth robe ($8,000 - 10,000) claimed to be the last item of clothing Monroe wore before her death.
This is also an umbrella Monroe held for an iconic photograph taken by Andre de Dienes in 1949 at Tobey Beach.
Other highlights from Marilyn's Brentwood home include; an orange Pucci blouse ($7,000-9,000), Monroe's dining room table (est. $10,000/12,000), living room coffee table (est. $8,000/10,000), Mexican tile table (est. $500/1,000), set of four living room folding benches (est. $5,000/7,000), Mexican framed mirror (est. $3,000/5,000), and other fine & decorative art pieces.
After Marilyn's death in 1962, her home at 12305 Fifth Helena, Brentwood, CA was purchased via auction by Dr. Gilbert Nunez. On August 5, 1962, Betty Nunez went to the realtor's office to register to view the property. By March of 1963, the Nunez's had thought Marilyn Monroe they had ownership, but a half dozen other realtors had also sold the house and the e...

A TRUE LIFE VIEW OF BRITAIN - CARAVANS AND ALL
With its white walls, beech flooring and pictures hung on the wall it could be any gallery space, but appearances can be deceptive.
Mind your head and sorry there's only room for one because welcome to the 'Caravan Gallery'.
In 2000 Jan Williams and Chris Teasdale set out around the country with one aim in mind - photographing Britain and the way we live today, wrinkles and all.
But the one question they faced was how could they display the fruits of their efforts? The answer lay in a small advert in a local newspaper.
This advert led them to a tiny 1969 mustard coloured caravan, which they converted into possibly the smallest gallery in the world.
The two photographers now travel the length and breadth of the country cataloguing life as they find it and displaying their pictures in their portable gallery.
Their photos aren't the typical rose tinted views that you often see in travel books or on seaside postcards.
Instead they capture the absurd anomalies of an eccentric, rougher and sometimes seedier side of this green and pleasant land.
Using these images the couple have produced their own tongue in cheek postcards of Britain, which have caught the eye of fashion designer Paul Smith.
Jan and Chris have now signed a deal that will see them exhibiting their photographs in Paul Smith stores in San Franciso, Los Angeles and New York.

Pop singer Lulu tosses up in the air some of the thousands of cards sent to the BBC giving viewers choices of the song she should sing in the Eurovision Song Contest later this year. Helping Lulu sort out the cards today was her husband Maurice Gibb of the Bee Gees group who is almost completely hidden by the cards.
