Plastic Bottle Recycling in Bangladesh
October 14, 2025, Dhaka, Bangladesh: Workers sort used plastic bottles in a recycling factory in Dhaka, Bangladesh. They help to prevent the bottles from being discarded, sent to landfill, where they can take 1,000 years to biodegrade, or incinerated, which produces toxic fumes. The emission of CO2 and other greenhouse gases will be reduced if recycling takes place in the production of new plastics. This small yet significant act supports environmental sustainability by promoting a responsible cycle of reuse, reducing the strain on natural resources, and safeguarding our ecosystem for future generations. African Lions
A huge-scale operation is about to get underway at Whipsnade Zoo, as the animals, including African lions, rockhopper penguins and a pygmy hippo, will see how they measure up at the Zoo’s Annual Weigh In, on Thursday 21 August.
Keeping track of the animals’ vital statistics is key for the zookeepers and veterinarians to monitor the health and wellbeing of
all 11,000 animals at the conservation zoo.
The Bedfordshire zoo’s latest arrivals, a Bactrian camel named Ivor and seven energetic northern African lion cubs, will step onto the scales for the first time this year, while the zoo’s smallest inhabitants, including miniscule orange woodlice, will require extra sensitive equipment to weigh them accurately.
All the animals’ weights and measurements will be recorded in a shared database called the Zoological Information Management System (ZIMS), which enables zookeepers around the world to compare important information on thousands of threatened species.
