'Kiwi can't defend themselves': New Zealand wrestles with how to save an icon
Training programmes for working dogs and pets are aimed at protecting the flightless bird's dwindling numbers, but they come at a cost.

New Zealand's national icon, the fluffy and flightless kiwi, is one of the most vulnerable birds in the country. Conservation efforts have for years tried to boost kiwi population numbers, but still their status ranges from "recovering" to "nationally critical", depending on the species.

Desperate efforts at conservation have led to trials of measures such as the electric collar, which have raised concerns about the welfare of the dogs as much as the kiwi, and their use is banned in some places overseas.

There are roughly 68,000 left, and 2% of unmanaged kiwi die every year.

Dog owner Jenny Lux (LEFT) and trainer Blake Cole (RIGHT) work with Skye (RESCUE DOG-TRUE BREED NOT KNOWN) during a Kiwi Avoidance Training session in the bush at Mamaku, near Rotorua in New Zealand. Blake runs courses for "responsible dog owners" who want to ensure their dogs will avoid any kiwi they encounter while out in the New Zealand bush hiking, hunting or working. During the training the dogs recieve a short electric pulse from a collar when they come across stuffed kiwi that Blake has placed in the training area. The stuffed kiwi used in the training are animals that have previously been killed by dogs and are now being put to a good use in their death.
