Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip State Visit to Slovakia - 23 Oct 2008
In a continuation of her state visit to central Europe the Queen has arrived in Slovakia. Upon arriving in the capital Bratislava she was given a traditional welcome when she was presented with a gift of salt and bread by a couple dressed in national costume. President Ivan Gasparovic then showed her around the presidential palace where an 80-strong guard of honour gave her a military salute. Clutching an umbrella, the Queen also watched a display of folk dancing in the rain soaked square. Later she and Prince Philip viewed the The Freedom Gate, which marks the old Iron Curtain boundry between east and west. During her visit the Queen is due to meet Nobel Peace Prize nominee Sir Nicholas Winton, along with some of the 670 Jewish Czechoslovakian children who he rescued before World War II.

FRANCE REJECTS NEW CONSTITUTION IN NATIONAL REFERENDUM
France rejected the proposed new constitution in the national referendum held throughout the country by about a 55% majority of voters. The elections in June will now be to elect a new Constituent Assembly to sit for seven months and draft a new Constitution. The result of the referendum is taken as a sign that the country wants moderation in its home programme.
Photo Shows: Voting in the national referendum was a family matter in this polling booth in Paris. While mother and father voted the children waited with them.
