Madagascar is one of the most ecologically important places on the planet. Since it broke off from mainland Africa more than 65 million years ago, it has developed in isolation, and is now home to many species that exist nowhere else on the planet. Without the help of local conservationists, however, the survival of many of these species will come under threat. Madagascar lies 400 kilometres off the east coast of Africa and is legendary for the profusion of its wildlife and flora, 80% of which is found nowhere else on earth. The island offers diverse and spectacular scenery: mountains, deserts, rainforests, dazzling beaches fringing the Indian Ocean and island archipelagos linked by coral reefs and clear turquoise waters.It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1990.
