Wood cargo from the Russian ship Sinegorsk washes ashore at Ramsgate, Kent, Britain - 23 Jan 2009
Hundreds of tonnes of timber that fell from a cargo ship in the English Channel has prompted scavenging fears after washing ashore on the Kent coast. According to the Dover coastguard the shoreline around Ramsgate and Margate is piled high with wood that fell from the Russian-registered Sinegorsk earlier this week. The vessel shed its 1,500-tonne load of 6ft-long (1.8m) planks of untreated pine when it was struck by rough seas on Monday (19 January). A spokesman for Dover coastguard expressed concern over anyone trying to salvage the wood. "If they wade in to recover it they are putting themselves in real danger as the sea is so rough," he said. Kent Police have also warned people not to remove any timber from the shoreline, warning it was still the property of the original owner.

Ch Supt John Molloy said: "I would like to remind people that the shoreline can be a dangerous place, particularly with the current poor weather and people could be putting themselves at unnecessary risk by venturing into the sea to salvage the timber.
"This cargo remains the property of the original owner and to steal it is not only foolhardy, but also a criminal offence."
