REPORTAGE - Gaza: Alltag im Al-Nusirat Flüchtlingslager
January 17, 2018 - Gaza, Palestinian Territories, Palestine - A Palestinian woman sells vegetables at a market in al-Nusirat refugee camp in the Gaza strip on January 17, 2018. Gazans are strapped for cash and markets are suffering from an unprecedented recession. Meanwhile, on Dec. 30, for the first time in many years, shops in the southern Gaza Strip closed to protest the poor economic conditions. Economists say the Gaza Strip's economy has entered a phase of total collapse as the Israeli blockade continues into its 11th year and the Palestinian Authority (PA) in the West Bank has failed to lift sanctions, despite what Gazans hailed as a promise of relief weeks ago (FOTO: DUKAS/ZUMA)

Black Marble, an unprecedented new look at Earth at night - 05 Dec 2012

Black Marble, an unprecedented new look at our planet at night - 05 Dec 2012
Scientists unveiled on Wednesday (5 Dec) an unprecedented new look at our planet at night. A global composite image, dubbed Black Marble in reference to previous daytime Blue Marble images, constructed using cloud-free night images from a new NASA and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) satellite, shows the glow of natural and human-built phenomena across the planet in greater detail than ever before.
Many satellites are equipped to look at Earth during the day, when they can observe our planet fully illuminated by the sun. With a new sensor aboard the NASA-NOAA Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (NPP) satellite launched last year, scientists now can observe Earth's atmosphere and surface during nighttime hours.
The new sensor, the day-night band of the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS), is sensitive enough to detect the nocturnal glow produced by Earth's atmosphere and the light from a single ship in the sea. Satellites in the U.S. Defense Meteorological Satellite Program have been making observations with low-light sensors for 40 years. But the VIIRS day-night band can better detect and resolve Earth's night lights.
The new, higher resolution composite image of Earth at night was released at a news conference at the American Geophysical Union meeting in San Francisco. This and other VIIRS day-night band images are providing researchers with valuable data for a wide variety of previously unseen or poorly seen events.
Another view of the Earth at night, dubbed City Lights, Flat Map, is a composite assembled fr...

Three dogs cross the line at exactly the same moment
Amazing triple greyhound dead heat at at Romford Greyhound Stadium, Essex, Britain - 19 Jan 2011
Three greyhounds have made history by winning a race in a triple dead heat at odds of many millions to one. Viewers watching the 8.50pm greyhound race at Romford Stadium in London were stunned when all three dogs finished at exactly the same time. The track's photo finish technology was unable to split the greyhounds in the unprecedented triple dead heat. The three dogs were contesting the Coralcasino.com stakes over a marathon distance of 925 metres - the furthest that greyhounds can race over - making the feat even more incredible. A spokesman for bookmaker's Coral, said the odds of it happening were many millions to one. The three dogs were in Trap 1, Killishan Masai at odds of 4-1; Trap 5, Ayamzagirl at odds of 4-1 and Trap 2, Droopys Djokovic, at odds of 12-1
