Amazon billionaire Jeff Bezos has shown off his Blue Origin space company’s design for an unmanned lunar lander set to launch in the first quarter of next year.
The Blue Moon Mk1 cargo lander is expected to embark on its first mission during the first quarter of 2026, touching down near a crater named Shackleton at the Moon’s south pole.
The company is racing against other private companies including Tesla mogul Elon Musk and his rival SpaceX to deliver a suitable lander for US space agency NASA.
If Blue Origin can get their uncrewed lander on the Moon before SpaceX, it could give the company a strategic advantage as NASA reevaluates lander providers for its Artemis 3 mission to put human’s back on the lunar surface,
The company is said to be hoping to make the attempt within the next four months for what is dubbed the Blue Moon Pathfinder mission .
The plan is to demonstrate and validate the lander’s hardware and systems.
This includes its never-before-flown engine called the BE-7 said to be capable of making a precision landing.
The MK1 is smaller than Blue Origin’s planned human lander, MK2, but larger than NASA’s Sixties and Eighties Apollo lander.
This single-launch spacecraft is designed to launch aboard Blue Origin’s New Glenn and ferry up to three metric tons of payload to the lunar surface.
