Suspect thief stamps on baby after stopped by police, Zhengzhou, Henan province, China - 24 May 2010
SUSPECT THIEF STAMPS ON BABY
A suspected thief in China has drawn widespread horror after stamping on a baby.
The incident occurred in Zhengzhou, Henan province when two women carrying babies were detained after being accused of stealing a cell phone.
High school student Xiao Zheng was walking over a flyover when she suddenly discovered that her cell phone was missing.
She comments: "I then looked around and found two women holding babies just past me. A vendor told me that the women stole my phone."
Xiao ran up to the women and demanded that they return her phone.
"They jumped on me out of blue and started to pull my hair, saying I framed them and accusing me of stealing their cell phone."
The two women continued to abuse Xiao until "they suddenly threw my phone onto the ground, and I called police immediately".
Police arrived shortly afterwards, quickly followed by some of Xiao's family members.
As police tried to calm the situation down one of Xiao's angry relatives approached one of the suspect women and pushed her.
Shockingly, in response the woman in question threw her baby, a girl, onto the ground and stamped on it while shouting in protest.
As the baby screamed, both women then sat down on the ground and refused to move.
Eventually officers managed to get them into the back of a police vehicle and they were taken to the local station.
Miraculously, the baby escaped uninjured from the incident.
In China some thieves disguise themselves as parents holding children in order to appear less suspicious.
Even if they are caught by police they can then use the baby as an excuse when pleading for leniency from officers.
As such, sometimes these 'prop' babies are n...

New baby elephant is star attraction at Melbourne Zoo, Australia - 18 Feb 2010
BABY THE BEAUTIFUL ELEPHANT IS STAR ATTRACTION IN MELBOURNE
A new baby elephant has become the star attraction at Melbourne Zoo, drawing in huge crowds ever since she was born last month.
Due to the huge numbers of people eager to catch a glimpse of the super cute new arrival the zoo has been forced to extend its public viewing hours.
Now, up to 3,000 people are lining up daily to catch a glimpse of the yet-to-be-named youngster.
The eager spectators are also being urged to cast their vote to name the new pachyderm.
Shortlisted are five Thai floral-themed names: Leelawa dee (frangipani), Mali (jasmine) Ma Li Wan (climbing jasmine) Su ma Li (osmanthus) and Lyares (meaning elephant and orchid).
Weighing in at a cuddly 147 kilograms, but growing fast, the new arrival is currently just known as 'Baby'.
She is the first baby elephant in the zoo's 147 year history and is only the second to be born in Australia.
She is also the first in the country to be conceived through artificial insemination after being born to Asian Elephant Dokkoon on 16 January after a 22-month pregnancy.
And little Baby certainly hasn't been disappointing her eager fans - happily cavorting round her enclosure and even splashing in the pool.
She also likes to mimic mom by picking up hay and pretending to eat it.
In reality, the youngster probably won't go onto solids until she's around three months old and currently downs around 12 to 14 litres of milk a day.

Swallow put into a 'flight harness' to help it learn to fly at the Ramat Gan Safari Park Animal Hospital, Israel - 11 Dec 2009

On A Wing And A Prayer
ON A WING AND A PRAYER
Looking like a high-flying stunt on the stage of a West End show, this young swallow chick is being given a little extra help to hopefully get it airborne one day.
Seven months ago the poor little thing, now named Sisu, was brought into the animal hospital of the Ramat Gan Safari Park in Israel with one of its wings in a terrible state, virtually missing.
Not to be put off, Dr. Ariela Rozenzweig, one of the hospital's vets, decided to take the chick under his wing, as it were.
Seeing that Sisu was grounded due to not having strong enough wing muscles, Dr Rozenweig saw a possible solution to the problem.
This came in the form of a harness on the end of a piece of string attached to the ceiling: a flight harness to keep the chick suspended but with its wings and legs free so it could practise its flying without fear of plummeting to the ground.
Once the wing has grown stronger, Sisu will be released into the wild.

A new TV commercial featuring roller-skating babies has become an internet sensation.
The video of babies in nappies performing skating stunts to the tune of legendary hip-hop track 'Rapper's Delight' by the Sugarhill Gang has received 4.4 million hits on video-sharing website YouTube over the last week.
Featuring 96 partly computer-generated babies, the action starts in true B-Boy style as they press the Play button on an enormous ghetto blaster, then launch into a series of breakdancing moves and rollerskating stunts, leaping over fences, railings and each other.
Forget seeing a baby's first steps, these are a baby's first flips, somersaults, handstands and flares.
The 60-second film was shot at London's Pinewood Studios as part of mineral water brand Evian's 'Live Young' international TV and viral (web video) marketing campaign.
The video is the third most watched on YouTube this week, falling just behind the footage of a supposed sighting of the ghost of Michael Jackson at the Neverland ranch during an NBC programme.
The US version of the ad has been watched 2.3 million times, the international version over 2 million times and the French clip 600,000 times.
The video is clocking up around 500,000 new hits every 12 hours.
One female YouTube viewer said of the ad: "It's one of the cutest things I've ever seen".
Some may remember the Evian babies from the last time they were given an outing in a commercial 11 years ago, when they performed an underwater ballet.
The ad was first broadcast on French, Belgian and Canadian television last weekend.
Due to the success of the online viral campaign, an Evian spokesman said that as yet no date has been set for showing the advert on British TV.

Cat Tattooing in Moscow, Russia - 20 Feb 2009
SICK PET TATTOO CRAZE SWEEPS RUSSIA
Animal rights campaigners have slammed a cruel new craze in Russia that has sprung up for so-called animal 'lovers'.
Rather than the traditional cat / dog grooming services, some Russians are now choosing to personalise their pets with tattoos.
Just one of the pets to undergo this kind of controversial 'body enhancement' is Mickey, a rare Canadian Hairless breed also known as a Sphynx cat.
After being knocked out, a Tutankhamun design was inked on to Mickey's chest as part of a three hour procedure.
Afterwards, his female owner declared herself delighted with the 'cattoo', saying she had wanted "something new and different for these new exiting times we live in ".
The practice has been slammed as barbaric and the fear is now that the trend will catch on amongst wealthy pet owners in the West.
"The ethical thinking about animals in Russia lags behind the West. People here mostly buy animals for selfish reasons. Everything else that happens to them afterwards is a consequence of that," comments activist Irina Novozhilova.

Former Star Trek actor George Takei had to endure a stomach churning Bushtucker Trial today in an effort to help win dinner for his fellow campmates. The 'I'm A Celeb' stars have to compete in these trials in order to collect stars; the more stars they collect the more food they earn for themselves and the rest of the camp. As part of the 'Bonanza' trial Takei was given a number of disgusting things to eat. To begin with he was presented with five dishes of his favourite food and five containing insects and was told that he would earn a star for every insect plate consumed. The actor went on to eat three live cockroaches, two live locusts, a Witchetty grub and a kangaroo penis. After chewing on the cockroaches Takei commented that they "tasted quite savoury and delicious". The only thing he didn't eat was a camel's testicle. However, his efforts were enough to win three main courses and a special beverage for himself and the other two finalists.

Jonathan, the Boer War Tortoise, St Helena - 03 Dec 2008
Mandatory Credit: Photo by Bournemouth News / Rex Features ( 825780b )
This rare picture of a Boer war prisoner snapped on the remote island of St Helena more than a century ago, has remarkably shed light on one of the planets oldest living inhabitants. Jonathan the Giant tortoise in the picture is still alive today.
Jonathan, the Boer War Tortoise, St Helena - 03 Dec 2008
BOER WAR TORTOISE IS WORLD'S OLDEST LIVING ANIMAL
At first glance he may look like any old tortoise but where Jonathan is concerned 'old' is definitely the right word.
At 176-years-old he can lay claim to being the oldest living animal on the planet.
In fact when this black and white picture of him was taken, showing Jonathan munching on grass on the Island of St Helena during the Boer War, he was already around 70-year-old.
He was photographed being watched by a guard and a prisoner of war around 1900 after arriving on the island in 1882.
His life has spanned eight British monarchs from George IV to Elizabeth II, and 50 prime ministers.
Today Jonathan still lives on the same South Atlantic Island, along with fellow tortoises David, Speedy, Emma, Fredricka and Myrtle.
The previous oldest tortoise was thought to be Harriet, who died in 2005 aged 175 in Australia.
A spokesman for the island's tourist board said Jonathan is owned by the St Helena government and lives in the specially built plantation on the governor's land.
He said: "Jonathan is the sole survivor of three tortoises that arrived on St Helena Island in 1882.
"He was already mature when he arrived and was at least 50-years-old.
"Therefore his minimum age is 176-years-old. He is the oldest inhabitant on St Helena and is claimed to be the oldest living tortoise in the world.
"He lives in the grounds of Plantation House which is the governor's residence with five other tortoises who are much younger than him.
"He fe...

The Best Buffalo
THE BEST BUFFALO
When a groom chooses his best man, it is usually a difficult choice.
But not for Ronald Bridges - he knew exactly who he wanted to fill the role.
His tame buffalo Wildthing stepped in to perform the all important role on the renewal of his wedding vows to wife Sherron - although at a staggering 90 stone, he towered over them both.
And Sherron had no objection - Wildthing has lived with them and their three children Lloyd, 34, Will, 15, and Taylor, 13, at their family home in Quinlan, Texas, since he was born in May 2005.
The couple have brought up Wildthing as part of the family and, despite him weighing the equivalent of eight humans, he has free run of the house and even has his own room in the house where he eats and sleeps.
Mrs Bridges, who runs a ranching business with her husband, said: "Wildthing is a real pussycat at heart.
'He and Ronald are absolutely devoted to each other. We are always aware that he is so big that he could hurt us with a swing of his head, so we are careful.
'But Wildthing absolutely dotes on Ronald - that's why he chose him to be his best man when we renewed our wedding vows. Wildthing follows him round like a shadow."
Mr Bridges, 60, decided to tame the buffalo when he was just a calf, soon after his birth.
Mrs Bridges, 36, said: 'Ronald has been training cattle all his life and he really wanted to tame this little buffalo calf.
'So using a halter harness and with the help of our son Lloyd, Wildthing was soon loving all the attention, and he really focused all his attentions on Ronald.
'When he was tame we decided that he really deserved a room in our house where he could come in and eat and sleep...

Elderly prisoners (in green) clean the corridor outside their rooms/cells, watched over by a guard, in Onomichi prison, Japan. The handrail down the centre of the corridor is provided for the benefit of the elderly and infirm prisoners., As the Japanese society rapidly ages, the country is now having to deal with a sharp rise in the number of criminals from the pensioner age group. Over 65's now count for the fastest growing age group of inmates.
The Crisis Of Japan's Ageing Prison Population
THE CRISIS OF JAPAN'S AGEING PRISON POPULATION
At a rate much higher than any other developed nation, Japan's over-60s are becoming the fastest-growing criminal age group in the country. The number of over-70s alone charged with criminal offences has trebled within the last 8 years from approximately 10,000 to 30,000. Last year the ratio of elderly offenders to younger offenders was 1:6 compared to 1:24 a decade before.
The most common crimes by the elderly tend to be petty offences like theft and shoplifting, but there were also 150 reported convictions for murder. Such is the dramatic increase in the percentage of elderly prisoners (currently 12% of the total prison population), Japan has been forced to invest billions of yen to construct 3 new prison wards to house over 1,000 inmates.
The causes behind this phenomenon are not simple to explain away. The obvious roots lie in Japan's rapidly ageing population, in which the demographic of the typical 'population triangle', which comprises of a large base of young people and small pinnacle of the elderly, is starting to invert, meaning that the number of Japanese over the age of 60 is increasing at a greater rate than usual in comparison to the increase rate in the number of under 30s.
However, this does not explain away the fact that while the number of Japane...
