Cat Survives After Being Cooked In Microwave
A man tried to kill his pet cat by microwaving it after it scratched his hand, a court has heard.
After loosing his temper, Stephen Stacey, 20, of Portsmouth, placed the animal inside the kitchen appliance.
He then cooked it for five seconds, causing the 'defencless' animal to be zapped with harmful radiation and to cook from the inside.
Amazingly, the black and white cat, who has now been named 'Nancy', survived the ordeal, despite still emitting heat seven hours after the incident.
Portsmouth Magistrates' Court heard how Stacey's neighbour Simon Allen was woken at 2.30am on February 25 this year when Stacey's girlfriend Jade, 17, knocked on his door in tears.
After hearing what had happened he went round and confronted Stacey, asking him where the cat was.
He then "opened the microwave and the cat walked out with his tongue hanging out".
Sarah Wheadon, prosecuting, said: "Simon Allen went to their flat and the defendant said the cat had scratched him. He showed him his hand which did indeed have scratches on it.
"Stacey told him he had intended to kill the cat by throwing it out of the window or putting it in the microwave.
"He said he had been in the microwave for about five seconds".
Mr Allen took the cat away from Stacey, who had been drinking all day, and back to his flat where he called the RSPCA.
Ms Wheadon added: "RSCPA inspector Jenny Ride examined the cat and found the top of her eyes were red and she was still hot to touch".
In order to save Nancy, Jenny put her in the bath and poured three jugs of cold water on her to cool her down.
She was then taken to a local vets where ice packs were placed in her cage to keep her cool.
It was discovered that she had suffered injuries to her eyes, brain tissue, other in...

'Yuck! The Things People Eat' Food Project - Nov 2010

Yuck! The Things People Eat
One man has made it his mission to taste disgusting delicacies around the world.
Neil Setchfield's 'Yuck! The Things People Eat' project has seen him try unusual foods ranging from fried songbird in Cambodia to pigs brain in the Philippines.
The artfully photographed results of his brave culinary journey have been collected in a book of the same name.
Neil explains: "A couple of years ago I was walking through a market in Cambodia when I came across a stall selling stir fried tarantulas. I took some photographs but they didn't really convey the reality of what was a huge bucket piled high with a crispy gelatinous mass of cooked black spiders. So I bought some, as you do, not really sure whether to eat or to photograph. In the end I did both - the spiders tasted mainly of the spicy sauce they were cooked in - but when I looked at them in all their gory detail through the camera with a macro lens I just knew I had a interesting project.
"The reaction to the photographs was just as inspiring. Whilst everyone back in London went "YUCK!", when I showed them the pictures, in Cambodia the natural response was "YUM!". Whilst one nation was appalled the other was just peckish. And this became the entire premise of the project, how differing cultures react to different types of food.
"But the spiders were just the beginning and now three years later I've eaten and photographed everything from wild grey squirrel in the north of England to roast guinea pig in Peru, from sheep's penis and black scorpion kebabs in China to kangaroos tail in Australia. And that's just a fraction of the whole.
"What I've come to realise is that some people somewhere will eat every single bit of every creature they can catch and cook - and someti...

THE PICTURE PERFECT BEAUTY OF ZERMATT
The picture-postcard town of Zermatt is one of Switzerland's best-known ski resorts.
This charming village is nestled in the upper Valais, one of the alpine cantons of Switzerland, and is around 10 km (6 miles) from the border with Italy.
Found on a 1,620 m (5,315 ft) high plateau, it sits at the foot of the highest and most photographed peak in the country, the 4,478m (14,692ft) tall Matterhorn.
This mighty mountain was one of the last alpine peaks to be conquered. And the expedition that did eventually reach the top in 1865 ended dramatically, with only three of the seven climbers surviving the attempt.
Until the mid-19th century, Zermatt was predominantly an agricultural community - its name, as well as that of the Matterhorn itself, derives from the surrounding alpine meadows, or matten.
In the German language, the town is "Zur Matte" or "in the meadow."
Zermatt has the longest winter skiing season in Europe and some of its ski runs and lifts are even open year-round.
The area boasts some 114 miles of skiing with a 5,315 foot vertical, with most of the skiing being best for intermediate and advanced skiers.
The village of Zermatt itself is geographically small, with cobbled pedestrian streets and tiny alleyways dating from the middle ages.
Traditional wooden chalets are a common sight but Zermatt also has a distinctly cosmopolitan, not to mention upmarket, atmosphere
The village can only be reached via a spectacular cog railway from the valley below.
This forms part of an extensive network of super-efficient cable cars, gondolas and cog railways that whisk skiers to the separate ski areas.
To prevent air pollution, which could obscure the panoramic views of the Matterhorn, the entire village is a combustion-engine car-fr...

Andi Oliver’s Wadadli-spiced Cubano pork belly
Andi OliverÕs Wadadli-spiced Cubano pork belly. We make this on the barbecue at Wadadli Kitchen, and it works brilliantly that way Ð start cooking when thereÕs a low glow on the coals and slow-cook with the lid down for about the same amount of time as below, basting the belly in the excess marinade over several hours.
