CALENDAR BRINGS DORSET'S JURASSIC JEWELS TO LIFE

A new charity calendar aims to bring some of Devon and Dorset's hidden beauty spots to life with a hidden twist - cleverly camouflaged women.

The 'Jurassic Jewels' calendar features various locations from the famed Jurassic coastline.

Skillfully worked into each of the pictures is calendar girl Sky Seraphin, covered only in body paint and blending into the background.

In one she appears as a fearsome water nymph emerging from a waterfall, while another shows her virtually indistinguishable from the pebbly beach around her.

The beautiful body of work was the brainchild of project organiser Cheryl Reynolds, and this is the second calendar she has produced.

For the 2009 edition images of the Jurassic Coastline were painted on to the models' bodies, and they were then photographed against a black backdrop.

Just like this year, the beautiful body art was all down to the creative talents of artists Mark Gannon and Amanda Williams.

Wanting something different for this year's calendar, they decided to take their model outside to shoot her on location.

Not surprisingly the decision proved to be slightly more difficult, and caused a few raised eyebrows from curious passers-by.

The 2010 calendar will raise money for children's hospice Julia's House, in Dorset, as well as MacMillan Cancer Support.

Sales from last year's GBP 7.50 calendar helped to raise GBP 4,000 for charity and the hope this year is to top that.

As such, everyone involved in putting the calendar together worked free of charge - bringing their different skills and their shared love of the landscape of the Jurassic Coast.

    POPPIES IN LATE SHOW

A field of late-flowering bright red poppies is so magnificent that drivers have been stopping their cars to have a look.

The spectacle near Shaftesbury in north Dorset covers several acres of farmland and hundreds of people have been stopping to take photos.

Thought to have been accidentally drilled into the field, the poppy seeds have emerged after the warm spell over the last few weeks.

A month before Remembrance Day, the bright red display has stunned locals who have never seen such a sight at this time of year.

Though the field is privately owned, it is surrounded by National Trust grassland.

Chris Gingell, who manages the trust's wardens for north Dorset and surrounding area said the poppies had probably been unintentionally spread.

He said: "These poppies have obviously made a late showing after a warm September. We'd expect them to have been over by the end of August.

"The seeds have probably been unintentionally spread and drilled into the field with the corn. That's why often poppies suddenly appear where they've never been seen before.

"It's very startling and because the temperature is cooler now than it would be in the height of summer they might last for a week of so.

"When it is very warm they only last for a couple of days."

Wasteland up for sale at GBP 13.5m, Sandbanks, Dorset, Britain - 29 Jul 2009
    THE GBP 13.5 WASTELAND

At first glance it looks nothing more than an abandoned piece of wasteland with its only asset being a rusty wheelbarrow that has been dumped there.

But this scruffy, weed infested plot is defying the recession by going on the market for a staggering GBP 13.5 million.

Despite not having a brick to its name, it is one of the most expensive properties in Britain due to its location, location, location - in the millionaire resort of Sandbanks.

The site comes with the potential to build the biggest mansion on the exclusive Dorset peninsula, has access to its own sandy beach and boasts stunning views of Poole Bay.

The 1,393 square metre plot is up for sale for the equivalent of nearly GBP 10,000 a square metre.

And whoever buys it will have to spend another GBP 5 million building a home in keeping with its stunning surroundings.

For the same GBP 18 million outlay, you can buy a six bed house in London's Knightsbridge or a 3,000 acre estate with six houses in Surrey.

Further afield, you can buy a four bed condominium on New York's Park Avenue or a seven bed mansion in Palm Beach, Florida.

The plot of land is in the heart of Sandbanks, which is lined with multi-million pound waterfront mansions and home of Tottenham FC boss Harry Redknapp.

The sandy peninsula - said to be Britain's version of Miami Beach - seems to be immune to the credit-crunch.

Despite the astronomical sum, there is no shortage of potential buyers, with a Russian billionaire rumoured to be one of the interested parties.

Until recently a modest-looking three bed house stood on the site.

But that was sold to a developer who quickly won planning permission to demolish it in order to build another home in its place.

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh were in Dorset today to tour the site of the 2012 Olympic sailing events. The Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy was the first Olympic venue to be finished. The couple arrived in Weymouth aboard the royal train from London's Waterloo Station. They were driven to Portland Dockyard by the Lord Lieutenant of Dorset where they were met by cheering schoolchildren waving Union Jack flags. As well as touring the facilities at the Academy the Queen and Prince Phillip also met stakeholders in the venue and the Games, including chairman of the 2012 organising committee Lord Sebastian Coe. They also watched as local youngsters took to the sea in dragon boats, kayaks and laser picos. The couple then boarded a Sunseeker yacht in order sail to Weymouth's Esplanade where they viewed a sand sculpture of Windsor Castle and watched football and volleyball demonstrations on Weymouth beach.

Marine Biologist Emily Madge (21), from the Weymouth Sealife centre, struggles to hold on to this enormous 4 kilo Crawfish, which was caught by amazed fisherman off the Dorset coast. Experts estimate that 2 foot long sea creature must be nearly 50 years old and is the first seen in south coast waters for over 10 years.

CRAW BLIMEY! THE 3FT LONG, 12LB MONSTER FROM THE DEEP

This is the monster from the deep that was caught in the English Channel for the first time in 10 years.

Stunned fisherman Martin Foley got the shock of his life when he pulled his nets up and found the colossal crawfish.

The crustaceans are normally found in colder waters off the Scottish coast but it is believed some have moved south because of the recent cold winter in England.

This 3ft long specimen is about 50 years old and weighs 12lbs. It was found five miles east off Portland, Dorset.

Mr Foley, 55, initially thought about selling it to the fish market because crawfish can fetch a high price as they are quite rare.

Instead the fish was spared from the dinner plate and Martin took it to his local Sea Life Centre in Weymouth.

Crawford - as he has been named - will now go on display in the attraction's Bay of Ray's tank.

Anna Russell, a marine expert at the Sea Life Centre, said: "Crawfish prefer really cold water and hence are most common around the Scottish coast.

"That's why we gave him a Scottish name.

"His appearance was especially surprising given global warming is meant to be making our waters warmer.

"In recent years we have had wanderers from further south caught here like marbled electric rays, sunfish and sea turtles.

The 23-year-old plans to moor his new 90ft ride in Monaco, where he can soak up the rays with Pussycat Doll girlfriend Nicole Scherzinger, 29.

Lewis has even had it painted black and silver to represent his team, McLaren, with whom he has a five-year racing contract worth GBP 70m.

The yacht, boasting luxury cabins, lounges, plasma TVs and a hi-fi system, is being finished at the Sunseeker's Yard in Portland, Dorset, before it is transported to the Mediterranean.

Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton has splashed out on a vehicle that is a bit larger than his usual mode of transport: a GBP 5m yacht.

BOXER WITH BREAST IMPLANTS BANNED FROM THE RING

A model-turned-boxer has been banned from fighting - because of her breast implants.

Sarah Blewden, 25, has been told that repeated blows to her false breasts could knock them out of shape and damage her breast tissue.

Now boxing chiefs won't allow her to compete - dealing a knock-out blow for her hopes of competing in the Olympics in the future.

Sarah had surgery in 2003 to take her chest size up to a 32C from a 32B and to boost her modeling career.

She turned to boxing two years ago as a way of keeping fit but realised she had a natural talent for it.

Sarah, who runs a successful hair salon, applied to the Amateur Boxing Association (ABA) so she could compete in the ring.
She was stunned when she was told she wasn't allowed to due to her implants.

A medical expert from the association said Sarah's chest was at risk of 'capsular contracture' or distortion if her breasts were repeatedly hit.

Blood cells in the breast tissue pushed forward by the implants could also be harmed, it was ruled.

Sarah, from Poole, Dorset, said: "I think it is just ridiculous. My surgeon said they make me no more vulnerable than any other woman. They are not enormous ones - they are in proportion.
