  • ‘It’s happening everywhere’: Channel 4 CEO Alex Mahon on TV’s deep crisis

‘It’s happening everywhere’: Channel 4 CEO Alex Mahon on TV’s deep crisis
The network boss believes production companies that underpin Britain’s global reputation face being forced out of business.

Alex Mahon’s assessment of the crisis facing the television market is frank: the Channel 4 boss believes many of the production companies that underpin Britain’s global reputation for making hit shows face being forced out of business.

Amid the worst ad slump in more than 15 years, which the chief executive has described as “market shock” territory, her comments are unlikely to warm the already strained relations between the broadcaster and the 300 independent TV producers that depend on it.

Alexandra (Alex) Rose Mahon is a British businesswoman. She has been the chief executive of Channel 4 since October 2017 as the first female CEO of the channel.

Prior to his appointment as CEO Resource Solutions, Andrew has worked with the Robert Walters Group as a Board Advisor for fifteen months and brings with him a wealth of International business experience, including six years at the now privatised and previous FTSE250 Telecoms business, Colt Technology Services, where he held multiple Executive roles, culminating in becoming the Group COO.

He began his career in the Military, serving for eleven years, and across multiple global conflicts, with five of those years being in the UK Special Forces, prior to embarking on his successful business career.

His Private Equity career started in 2014, alongside investor Lloyds Development Capital (LDC), where he was a portfolio CEO of an education business that supported disadvantaged people, through industry accredited educational programmes and qualifications, in order to secure employment. This ignited Andrew’s passion for social purpose and through his business and charitable activities he has been instrumental in helping thousands of young people change their lives for the better, by shaping and providing routes into work for them.

Previous positions held include: Advisor for the Bank of England Decision Maker panel, Co-Chair of the Employers Social Mobility Alliance (A PWC study into social poverty and early years to work), Board Advisor to The Storytellers, and Trustee of Raphael Rowe Foundation.

In 2021, Andrew was awarded ‘Entrepreneur of the Year’ by the Ex-Forces in Business Awards for his outstanding contributions to business leadership, society and charity. Andrew is also an official ambassador for the Genies Wish charity.

'The investment industry is just a wall of men': Tessa Clarke of Olio on the battle facing female entrepreneurs
Tessa Clarke boss of the food-sharing app has cut waste, helped reduce emissions - and shown venture capitalists what startups led by women can do.

In the UK, less than 2% of equity investment goes to high-growth companies with female founders, according to analysis by Beauhurst, with 85% going to those founded by men and the rest to mixed teams. That's no surprise given that the vast majority of the capital in Europe is deployed by men.

"It's just a wall of men," says Clarke. "Understandably, they gravitate towards solving problems that they understand and they feel passionate about, which is why we've seen so much investment in crypto and fintech and AI ... and so little in community-based solutions and solving the climate crisis. Until we change the gatekeepers of capital, we're not going to change the fate of female-founder businesses."
