People enjoy the Diamond Beach Right next to the famous Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon you will find a black volcanic sand beach where icebergs from the lagoon drift ashore and create the most magical setting. The blue, black, transparent and white icebergs sit on the beach and slowly melt and you can walk amongst them, see through many of them and play around them.
    Seasonal weather, Iceland - 19 Nov 2018

The icebergs originate at the glacier, Breidamerkurjokull, an outlet from Europe's largest ice cap Vatnajokull and therefore is the beach called Breidamerkursandur in Icelandic (sandur means sand). Actually, most Icelanders aren't familiar with the name the Diamond Beach as it is very recent and solely used in English.

    Jahresrückblick 2015: Skurrile Landschaften
Northern Lights and Eruption glow by Stefan Brenner

A photographer captured these amazing photographs of the Northern Lights coupled with the colours of an erupting volcano.

The photos not only show the vibrant display of the Lights but also show the orange glow from the continuing Holuhraun volcano eruption.

Software engineer Stefan Brenner, 31, who took the photos, said: "I travelled more than 9,320 miles (15,000km) through all parts of Iceland to see the Northern Lights.

"I really love them and cannot get enough of them. I've seen them when they have been extremely strong two times now when the sun activity was very high.

    Jokulsarlon, Iceland
Beautiful travel photos taken in darkness, worldwide
This spectacular series in fact began many years ago - when an artist's long working hours led him to go shooting photos at night.

These selected dimly lit shots from across the world prove that a lack of sunlight is certainly not always a bad thing. So, don't despair in these gloomy wintry days.

British Photographer Shoots Icebergs On the Beach
These stunning images show icebergs the size of small cars washed up on the beach.

They were taken over the last two years by British photographer Thomas Heaton on Jokulsarlon beach in Iceland.

Thomas from Whitley Bay was so impressed by the sight when he first visited in late 2012 that he returned last month.

The 29-year-old explains: "I love to travel to unusual destinations, mainly in order to photograph them.

"These pictures show hundreds of icebergs, some the size of cars, washed up on to the black volcanic sands of Jokulsarlon beach. The icebergs break off the nearby glacier and litter the beach, some shining as bright as diamonds. This truly is a magical place to visit."

Jokulsarlon in south-eastern Iceland is a large glacial lake Situated at the head of the Breidamerkurjokull glacier, it developed into a lake after the glacier started receding from the edge of the Atlantic Ocean.

The otherworldy location has featured in films including Batman Begins, Tomb Raider and Bond film Die Another Day.
