STOAT CHEATS DEATH AFTER SEVEN HOURS STUCK IN CAR GRILLE

A stoat, nicknamed Bumper, had a miraculous escape after it was hit by a BMW and driven more than 30 miles trapped in the grille of the car.

The tiny creature was found SEVEN hours later wedged at the front of the BMW Z4 sports car, with its face and front feet sticking out after the accidental hit-and-run.

The animal was first spotted on the road at High Dyke near the A1 junction at Colsterworth, Lincolnshire, by driver Mervyn Draper at 4am on Tuesday.

The 55-year-old aircraft technician was returning home from a night shift at RAF Cottesmor and thought he had run the small mammal over, but couldn't see the body on the road behind him.

Thinking it had escaped he continued on his journey home to Ewerby, near Sleaford, 32 miles away.

But the following morning he found the poor animal in the grille of his car fighting for survival and called the RSPCA.

"I couldn't believe it. It looked like he had hit it side-on, and the clips on the grille had opened and trapped him shut," said Mr Draper.

"When I told the vet what had happened, he just looked at me like I was totally insane and advised me to ring the RSPCA. I must have looked ridiculous."

RSPCA inspector Laura Jones helped Mr Draper prise the grille open and release the terrified stoat.

It was taken to Weirfield Wildlife Hospital in Lincoln and given pain relief and antibiotics.

He was later released back into the wild after checks showed it was fit and healthy.

"We're just really glad he was okay," added Mr Draper.
