The world's first sand hotel, Weymouth beach, Dorset, Britain - 23 Jul 2008

This Giant Sandcastle known as The Sand Hotel, The first and largest sand castle hotel ever to be built in the UK. The 4 metre high structure was built by Mark Anderson and a team of five staff
World's First Sand Hotel
With no toilet facilities or even a roof, the world's first ever sand hotel does have a sizeable ensuite bathroom in the form of the English Channel, but be warned, the sand gets everywhere.
Constructed with 1000 tonnes of sand by four sculptors in four 14-hour days, the structure on Weymouth beach is accommodating guests for £10 per night in rooms with no ceiling, 2 metre high walls and beds made of sand; that is, until the rain washes them away.
The structure was dreamed up by a hotel company to celebrate the current revival of Britain's beaches and countryside as holiday destinations.
The creator Mark Anderson told the BBC: "It is the biggest sandcastle-like structure ever in the UK. Four of us worked hard and with the help of a JCB we got it built. The beds are made of sand so it can get everywhere, especially between the toes. But the best thing is in the morning the tide laps through the door, what a great way to wake up."
Perhaps due to today's climate of fear surrounding spending, the credit crunch and the forebodings of an imminent recession, British beach holidays and resorts are enjoying a renaissance of late, as holidaymakers look for cheaper alternatives to travelling abroad by leaving their passports at home and exploring the great British countryside.
