A photo of a rescue dog panting in the long grass has won first prize in a competition to capture pictures of Britain's pets. The picture, taken by Yvette Roberts Shaw, was chosen from among more than 600 photos of cats and dogs in the annual contest run by PetSavers, a charity which is part of the British Small Animal Veterinary Association. This year's contest encouraged amateur photographers to take pictures of their pets at one of those special moments when they melt their heart. The competition was judged by staff at the British Small Animal Veterinary Association. Yvette, from Caerphilly, Wales, said: "Cassie is our rescue and is a Staffie x Boxer. She was in shelters for the majority of her younger years and was moved from Coventry to Bristol as she kept getting overlooked.

Great Horned Owls in Orange County, California, USA - 29 Apr 2017
Photographer Steve Shinn helped to return these adorable Great HOrned Owl chicks back to their nest after discovering them huddle on the ground in a park in Orange County. According to Steve the usual protocol in these situations is actually leave the birds where they are, especially as he could see the parents were close by. However, because the chicks were in danger, due to the public area where they were, park officials asked Steve to ?re-tree? them. He says: ?These birds have beaks that are designed to rip meat from bones and sharp talons that pierce flesh and clamp like a vise. A pair of stiff leather gloves made the job rather simple but without a ladder I could only get them to a low branch. They stayed there for a couple of days before finally venturing up into the canopy of a large pine tree?.

A mother grey seal keeps watch over it's young pup as a stormy high tide brings large waves crashing on a beach.
Grey seal pup in a sand storm on a Norfolk beach, Britain - 21 Nov 2015

Bad weather; sometimes you just have to sit tight and endure the storm.

This hardy grey seal pup seemed resigned to its situation on a windswept British beach last weekend.

Wildlife photographer Kevin Sawford headed out on a stormy day with the wind gusting over 50 mph to photograph a small colony of seals on the Norfolk coast.

He says: "I wanted to capture images of the harsh conditions the seals have to tolerate on days like this. The gusting wind constantly drove grains of sand through the air forcing the seals to take whatever cover they could. By keeping my distance, I was able to watch the seals behaviour and noticed that, despite these conditions, the pups seemed to be able to sleep through the adverse conditions for a lot of the time."

eCool: Invention Keeps Beers Cold by Burying them Underground
Festival goers will dig this - a beer fridge you bury in the mud.

The eCool is a new invention which sees you burying your favourite brew underground.

When thirst strikes it is just a matter of turning a crank handle and your beverage is delivered topside.

The device holds 24 cans and can stay installed the whole year, using the natural lower temperature of the ground to cool the drinks.

And because the eCool - short for Earth Cooler - does not use electricity, the Danish designers are marketing the device with the tagline "Save the world - one Earth-cooled beer at a time".

The company say: "Do something great for yourself and the environment. The earth cooler is intended for the man who has everything. It's easy to install in the garden or terrace, and uses no electricity. With the eCool you can always drink a cold beer with good conscience."

The coolness of the drink will depend on the temperature of the ground, which will vary on the country and season. The eCool maintains the same cooled temperature throughout the whole container.

The designers advise using a garden drill to prepare the 4ft hole for installation but say it "can be installed with a shovel as well, if you're a real man".

The hand-built eCool is currently available at a pre-price of $349 until 30 June 2014.

    Cricket Fight Club
A blood sport unique to China is enjoying something of a resurgence in popularity - cricket fighting.

This popular pastime dates back more than 1,000 years to the Tang Dynasty when it was first played by rich men.

However, it quickly became popular amongst commoners due to the gambling element.

During the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976) the practice was banned by the Communist government as it was considered to 'bourgeois'.

But once again the sport is now growing in popularity - particularly with the new generation.

While it is illegal in China to gamble, cricket fights themselves are legal and occur in most large cities.

In addition, each year a six-day national cricket-fighting competition draws hundreds of fans and combative insects to Chongming Island off the coast of Shanghai.

While some prefer to catch their own fighters, specialised crickets sellers in markets across the country - such as the Shanghai Bird, Flower and Insect market - conduct a brisk trade.

In 2010 more than 400 million yuan (US$63 million) was spent in China on crickets.

Just like race horses, crickets have pedigrees and some insects bred by knowledgeable keepers are in high demand.

The best fighters also exchange hands for high sums of money despite the fact they only have a short six month life span.

Each cricket must be kept in its own clay pot and their diets include ground shrimp, red beans, goat liver, and maggots.

Fighting is a natural occurrence between two males competing for territory.

Before a professional fighting bout, the insects are weighed and then matched up according to size, weight, and color

Owners 'encourage' their crickets to fight by stroking them with straw sticks to draw out their jaws.

Both combatants are then placed in a small fighting arena to battle...

The newly divorced Elizabeth Hurley arrived at the Ampney Crucis Village Fete in a Range Rover driven by new beau, former Australian cricketer, Shane Warne. After formally opening the fete, and almost taking a tumble on the cricket pavillion steps, Miss Hurley and Warne purchased a plastic duck to enter into the Duck Race. Shane Warne then tested his skills at skittles, and then at smashing crockery by hurling cricket balls. The pair then visited the secondhand bookstall where they purchased a Dick Francis novel, and then after having their pictures taken and signing autographs with many of the locals, they proceeded to the Womens Institute cake stall and purchased a number of cakes to take home 'for tea with the kids'
