Mandatory Credit: Photo by Laura Hedien/RMetS/Bav Media/Shutterstock (10751053v)
The picture shows Frosty Bison by Laura Heiden, age 55, from Grayslake, USA. It was taken in Yellowstone, Wyoming. She said: "We were touring the west side of the Park. It was a very cold sunrise, the coldest of the week so far. It was near zero degrees Fahrenheit. We came around the corner in our snow coach and saw this magnificent bison just sauntering down the road as if they owned the Park and they do! Keeping the required distance from him/her we hopped out, grabbed some photos, and quickly got back in the vehicle and watched as she/he walked about five feet right past us. It was as if we were not even there. It certainly added to the ghost-like event."The 26 finalists for this year's Weather Photographer of the Year have been announced and the public are being invited to vote for their favourite. The Royal Meteorological Society (RMetS), which celebrates its 170th birthday this year, in association with AccuWeather, has put the shortlisted pictures on their website and people can visit photocrowd.com/wpotyvote to vote until September 25.The popular competition, which is now in its fifth year, has attracted entries from around the world.

A bison causes a traffic jam
Hoof It: Bison Causes Traffic Jam
As excuses for being late go, being stuck behind a bison may be one of the more original.
This big fella was one of a herd who weren't wild about respecting the rules of the road.
Patient tourists had to endure hold-ups as a herd of the large bovines took their time to hoof it along a road in Yellowstone National Park.
Photographer Christine Haines says: "This was my first photographic trip to the park and while there I encountered several bison jams. A bison jam is when bison decide to just stop in the middle of the road and block traffic.
"Some tourists would patiently wait for them to move. Others were less patient and drove around them.
"It's kind of funny that once one person drives around them others followed. Just like cattle."

Baby grizzly bear climbs on mother's back at Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, America - 26 May 2011

Baby Bear Hitches A Lift To Thaw Cold Paws
A young grizzly bear hitches a ride on his mother's back in a bid to prevent his paws getting cold.
The months old youngster had sought refuge as his mum hunted for food in the freezing snow.
Steve Hinch photographed the pair from a safe distance in the Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming.
The 42-year-old said: "The grizzly was digging up voles in the meadow and as she had her head down the cub took his chance to climb up.
"I viewed the bears a couple of times and the cub would climb on to the sow's back and just sit there.
"Presumably it did this to get out of the snow because I didn't see this kind of behaviour when the snow had melted."
Steve, from Montana, added: "These two were near a road and a large crowd had gathered.
"Park rangers were there to try to keep the bears and people safe from each other.
"Being around grizzlies always has inherent danger with it as they are very powerful.
"But this is about as safe as can be to photograph a bear, with the crowd and rangers present."

Elk turn tables and chase away wolves
Elk Turn Tables On Wolves
It was a high stakes game of dare when a pack of wolves moved in on a herd of elk.
The stand off saw a nervous number of the large deer become the focus of the predator's attention.
But as the pack crept closer to their quarry they were in for a surprise - the elk bravely turned tables on their foe and chased them off.
Photographer John Dykstra captured the dramatic incident in the Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming.
He explains: "The Lamar Valley has been called the "Serengeti" of North America because of the large numbers of wildlife that call it home for the winter. Elk migrate down to the valley from higher elevations as the snow begins to accumulate. Following their food supply, mainly elk, the wolves arrive as well.
"It was just after sunrise when we arrived in the valley. Soon we noticed a small heard of elk on a not too distant ridge displaying somewhat unusual behavior. Moving closer we saw that someone else must have seen what we did. After further examination of the ridge, which was now even closer, we observed a pack of wolves as well as the elk.
"The wolves would stalk and then chase the elk a short distance and then retreat. During the wolf retreats two elk would muster up enough courage to protect the herd by reversing the roll and chasing the wolves.
"The wolves would regroup and begin the process over again. This back and forth chase and be chased drama went on for nearly an hour all the while I am photographing the action.
"It didn't take long to realise which of them were in control. It seemed to be a matter of life and death for the elk but only a game for the wolves.
"We learned from a watching naturalist that the pack consisted of two adult wolves and 5 "yearlings". The adults were teaching the yearlings th...
