General Jorge Rafael Videla, Argentinian dictator, c1976-1981. Videla came to power in 1976 in a coup that overthrew the government of Isabel Martinez de Peron. His rule featured widespread human rights abuses including the kidnapping, torture and murder of opponents of his regime, for which he was prosecuted after Argentina returned to democracy in 1983. He was found guilty and sentenced to life imprisonment and discharged fro the military, but only served 5 years in jail. President Carlos Menem pardoned Videla in 1990 but since then various legal attempts have been made to prosecute him again, culminating in his pardon being overturned in 2007. He is currently under house arrest.
