COMMUNICATIONS CENTRE HIT BY PART OF RECORD FORCE.
US Eighth Air Force heavy bombers pounded German road and rail supply lines and Luftwaffe air bases on 24 December in a record two thousand heavy bomber assault on Germany. Here the town of Bitburg, Germany, just behind the German front, receives heavy concentrations of bomb hits as the B24 Liberators and B17 Flying Fortresses give direct support to the Allied troops fighting just a short two miles away. The heavy bombers were escorted by Thunderbolts and Mustang figthers of the Eighth AAF

"MUSTANGS" OF ARMY CO-OPERATION COMMAND OF THE ROYAL AIR FORCE
"Mustangs" the American aircraft now used extensively by Army Co-operation Command of the Royal Air Force, are now co-operating with Fighter Command.
Daylight raids including the shooting up of railway engines, gun posts, and other selected targets are among their many successors.
"Mustangs" are among the fastest Army Co-Operation planes yet built in the United States and recently carried out one of the most successful raids over Germany, the first single engined fighters based on Britain, to go beyond the Reich border.
Heavily armed the "Mustangs" had their first big test in the Dieppe raid.
Photo shows: A pilot of Army Co-Operation Command, of the RAF climbing into his "Mustang" at the Operations station in England.
