Buiding Collapses in Laxmi Nagar, East Delhi, India - 16 Nov 2010
At least 33 persons died and another 60 sustained injuries when a five-storey building collapsed in a congested East Delhi residential area on Monday night. Around 45 residents were feared trapped under the debris when reports last came in. The incident, which triggered much panic in the area, took place at 8.20 pm in Lalita Park.
The building, which housed around 200 persons, mostly labourers, came down like a pack of cards and trapped the occupants under the debris. Among the 60 immediately rescued were women and children, who were rushed to nearby hospitals. Eyewitnesses said nearly 100 persons were inside the building when it collapsed. Owing to the area being heavily congested and densely populated, large-scale rescue operation could begin only around 11 pm with the arrival of gas cutters, cranes and fire tenders. The absence of electricity in the area also affected the rescue efforts.
