Massive steam pipe explosion in midtown Manhattan
A 24-inch underground steam pipe dating from 1924 blew up, tearing through Manhattan's 41st street near Grand Central Terminal and swallowing a tow truck. The blast killed one person and injured over two-dozen more. Although the explosion was not terrorism, the blast caused a brief panic about a possible attack. A geyser of steam and mud shot from the center of the blast, generating a tremendous roar and rising higher than the nearby 77-story Chrysler Building. ///
Steam shoots up from 41st Street after the blast.
