Wildcats released in Scottish Highlands in effort to prevent extinction in UK
Nineteen captive-bred cats released at secret location in Cairngorms in first phase of rewilding project.
Nearly 20 young wildcats have been released into the wild in a pine forest in the Scottish Highlands, in the first phase of a project to rescue the species from extinction in the UK.
The cats were reared at a wildlife park operated by the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS) as part of a breeding programme that will eventually lead to about 60 wildcats being released in the Cairngorm mountains south of Inverness.
The project, the first time a predatory mammal has been deliberately reintroduced in the UK, was set up after the cats’ numbers plummeted as a result of significant losses of native woodland, human persecution and interbreeding with domestic cats.
In 2019, a landmark report by the International Union for Conservation of Nature said the Scottish wildcat population was close to being functionally extinct because of a loss of genetic integrity and population decline. Its wild population, estimated then to be about 30 animals, was found to be "no longer viable".

Andy Holden: The impulse to gather objects is natural.
Andy Holden's grandmother never owned a cat, but she did collect ceramic cats – hundreds of them – from charity shops. After she died, Holden, a multimedia artist and musician from Bedfordshire, inherited her collection and turned them into an installation called Cat-tharsis (2016).

July 2021 marks the 150th anniversary of the first cat show in the world at Crystal Palace in 1871.
Judge Jane Allen in ring one.The first cat show took place in Crystal Palace, south-east London, in 1871. LondonCats Worldwide (LCWW) 150th anniversary celebration show is over two days, 200 competitors will converge on the Crystal Palace national sports centre, cat carriers in hand. In six rings along one wall of the show floor, judges will assess each animal for temperament, condition and conformity to the breed standard, before an audience of paying spectators.
Cats of all stripes stare out solemnly from rows of carriers. Somalis and siamese and siberians and shorthairs. Balinese and maine coons and Scottish folds and cornish rex. Persians, of course – those majestic emperors of the species. Abyssinians, with the ticked coat of an African wildcat. Sphinxes, caught in the nude, startled and abashed. Syrupy-sweet ragdolls with cherubic expressions. Bengals that look like leopards shrunk in the wash. And moggies, of course, skulking in the background like the unloved members of a pop group.
