I joined the Sea Org in Los Angeles – an organisation within the church comprised of its most dedicated members. Following investigations by government agencies in the US, L Ron Hubbard bought a fleet of ships and moved operations offshore. The Sea Org was asked to crew them, so I went with my new wife, a Scientologist.

In what was described by one onlooker as being "ludicrously early", Edinburgh's christmas tree was lifted into place on Sunday (4 Nov).
Photographer Tom Duffin captured the process as the huge spruce had its trunk shaved and was hoisted into a vertical position.
He explains: "The tree was lifted into place on The Mound today, which some folk think seems a wee bit early. The council face criticism for the chopping down of 51 trees in Princes St Gardens East, seemingly to make way for a larger Christmas Market."
