If you go down to the woods today ... you may just be as lucky as photographer Bret Charman and spot these beautiful brown bears. While many consider themselves lucky to get a glimpse of a bear, Bret was able to get remarkably up close to the animals - and they even appeared happy to pose for a set of stunning portraits set against the vibrant green of the forest. Bret comments: "I was invited to head out to Slovenia to photograph the bears and try to promote this population to the UK, trying to increase tourism. This population of brown bear is growing but is still under threat from hunting, particularly from hunting clubs which operate in the Dinaric Alps and across much of Central Europe.

British photographer Tim Plowden lives in a wild corner of Singapore that is also called home by a family of smooth-coated otters. The photographer has been keeping track of the adorable animals throughout 2017 as they have successfully raised a clutch six cubs. Their territory stretches along several miles of coastline, a network of mangrove rivers as well as urbanised sections of river and parkland. And Tim isn't the only person to be enchanted by the furry family with many locals having also taken them to heart. Tim comments: ?The playfulness of the cubs is enchanting and I love how strong their family bonds are. They always look out for each other and if they are apart for any length of time they greet each other with such exuberance it makes you appreciate just how close their family ties really are".

Meet Carlow the firefighting cat. Well, not quite firefighting, you are more likely to find this rescued male moggie asleep on a pile of crew jackets, or asleep on a fire truck, or under one for that matter.

Four-year-old Carlow lives in a firehouse in Yorkville, Manhattan after being found and adopted by firefighters of Engine 22, Ladder 13.

He was an underfed stray kitten found hiding in a tyre at a mechanic?s shop when they found him.

"The idea was that Carlow could help keep mice out of the firehouse. Ever since he's been here, we don't see many mice at all," comments a fire station spokesperson, who says they are 'Carlow's PR'.

Mostly, found dozing, there is some excitement : a disgruntled Carlow is pictured being given a wash along with the comment: "Throwback nightmare to the time they tried to wash me".

Photographer Ulderico Granger, 19, grew up in Hawaii, and couldn't help but develop a fascination with nature.

Ulderico said: "I suppose I take photos to capture moments of purity and for me, those occur in nature. I am on a journey to find the genuine. I see photography as a tool through which we can preserve the beauty of life."

All along their journey, refugees go from one transit camp to the other.

Photographer Frederic Seguin captured a photo series of Refugees 'in transit' as they make their way between camps in Macedonia. The series shows the strength and resilience of refugees as they try to make their way to safety.

Frederic said: "I wanted to take in all the different aspects of one of these transit camps, through the eyes of refugees.

"From crossing the border to leaving on a train, my pictures show you what it is inside and outside the transit camp of Gevgelija in the south of Macedonia."

With this photo series, Frederic wanted to emphasize the changing political situation, which has affected the transit camps.

Buoy! This is one seal who really knows how to take it easy. Photographer Drew Buckley captured the grey seal taking it easy near Ramsey Island in Pembrokeshire. As it basked in the autumn sunshine the lazy creature flopped out on the orange buoy and appeared to enjoy 40 winks when it closed its eyes. And though the message wasn't meant for him, he also took no notice of the 'no landing' sign plastered across the side of the buoy, which was floating next to a lifeboat. As Drew snapped away the curious seal lifted its head to take a look at him, but clearly was in no hurry to move from its comfortable perch. According to Drew he was unable to resist photographing the "comical" sight of the "cheeky" seal enjoying its sunbathing.

"Are you OK buddy?" a seagull seems to be saying as it inpects a poorly California sea lion resting on the beach.

Thankfully, the concerned bird wasn't the only one on hand to aid the stricken mammal.

A team from The Marine Mammal Center rehabilitation facility attended the scene at Moss Landing, California and carried out a rescue.

Wildlife photographer Michael Yang captured the incident as the seven-person team cautiously approached the sea lion, before carrying it away to be treated.

Laura Sherr, of the Marine Mammal Center, said: "This animal has been named is Karen Light, as we name all our patients, and was rescued due to lethargy, shaking, underweight, and allowing people to approach."

Spot The Critter: Camouflaged Sea Creatures
    Can you spot the critter?

These amazing images show the lengths - or is that depths? - these undersea creatures go to disguise themselves.

British photographer Ed Brown captured these pictures last month at Lembeh Strait in Indonesia.

He explains: "The pictures were taken on my latest trip to Indonesia, a place called Lembeh Strait, well known to divers for having some of the best "muck diving" in the world. Muck diving can be characterised by the black sand and general bleakness of the seabed. It doesn't look much, but hides some of the weirdest critters you'll find underwater. The occasional coral outcrops house some of the more colourful examples; the pygmy seahorse (Hippocampus bargibanti) being a particular favourite of mine, and only about 2cm big."

Yes, I'm Special: Gigantic Steller Sea Lion is Head and Shoulders Above The Rest
Some guys just think they are special - and this pumped-up steller seal lion certainly towers above the rest of his cousins.

The gigantic specimen was spotted amidst his diminutive sea lion pals at Moss Landing, California. Although, hilariously, one appears to be trying to ape his huge pal's pose.

Photographer Michael Yang says he has been making this his vacation home for the past several years.

He explains: "He visits for several weeks at a time and resting on the already crowded dock when he is not out hunting for prey.

"The much smaller California sea lions, which are here most of the year, give way when he wants to come onboard.

"The California sea lions are already a local tourist attraction having completely taken over the Visitor's Dock. The Steller sea lion draws even more people. Most people are amazed at how much bigger he is compared to the California sea lions. The dock is right off Highway 1 and only a couple of feet from the parking lot making the sea lions very accessible."

Shelbi Stoudt, Stranding and Data Manager at The Marine Mammal Center, says that the first time they encountered this Steller sea lion was in March of 2011. Since then, it has been coming back yearly for a couple of weeks at a time to rest with the California sea lions on the same dock.

Although this is within the normal range of the Steller sea lion (there is a breeding colony about 40 miles away at Año Nuevo Island), Stoudt explains that it is unusual behavior for a Steller sea lion to rest with a group of California sea lions. She assumes that this is a younger male animal as they tend to explore more, returning to the breeding grounds wh...

Sooty Tern rests on volcanic rocks
Soofty Tern lands on top of a pelican's head, Santa Cruz Island, Galapagos - Oct 2012
    Hey, wait your tern!

A pelican was rudely interupted as it tried to land a fish - when a sooty tern landed on its head.

The cheeky invader was trying to nab the tasty catch, but the unflappable brown pelican had a simple solution to the problem; it kept its catch underwater.

Nate Chappell snapped the hilarious scene off Santa Cruz Island in the Galapagos.

He says: "There were several sooty terns and brown pelicans sitting on the volcanic rocks there. One pelican flew out into the water to start fishing but a tern flew out and landed on the pelican's head.

"The tern was obviously perched and waiting, ready to steal the pelican's catch when the pelican bought it up. The juvenile pelican never brought his catch out of the water, so the tern didn't have a chance to steal it. After a while the tern gave up and flew off."
