Paralysed children Buried for Solar Eclipse Cure, Gulbarga, India - 22 Jul 2009
SICK CHILDREN BURIED IN PITS FOR SOLAR ECLIPSE CURE

During the recent solar eclipse millions across Asia looked to the skies in amazement.

However, some children watched the event from an altogether different angle - buried up to their necks in manure.

Numerous parents from the south Indian city of Gulbarga buried their sick children in the hope that the power of the total eclipse would cure them.

As the sky darkened unnaturally early in the morning various areas of the city saw desperate parents and their children taking part in this so called 'eclipse therapy' in a bid to cure everything from polio to paralysis.

The idea that an eclipse can cause miraculous healing is a deeply ingrained superstition, primarily among some Muslims.

Due to this parents are willing to subject their sick children to the ordeal of being partially buried in piles of manure while the eclipse takes place. In particular, any affected limbs or areas of the body must be covered for the healing to take place.

In preparation for the eclipse manure dumps around the city were cleaned of other refuse and numerous pits were dug.

Around 100 children with a variety of different illnesses and conditions were then partially buried into each pit a few minutes before the eclipse began.

Despite the subsequent wailing and crying their parents would not relent and merely pacified them by offering biscuits and sweets.

A few of the hapless children, unable to struggle any more, fainted, while the more resilient fell asleep.

Once the children were removed from the pits a massage oil was then applied over their bodies.

Believers in 'eclipse therapy' are many; according to one father, Nasir Ahmed, his son's arm healed after he was buried, going in ...

Editorial only: Yasukuni Shrine, originally named Tokyo Shokonsha was constructed in June 1869 by order of the Meiji Emperor to commemorate soldiers who had died in the Boshin War and had fought on the side of the Restoration. At that time it was one of several dozen such shrines built throughout Japan. In 1879, the shrine was renamed Yasukuni Jinja and became one of the principal shrines associated with State Shinto as well as the primary national shrine for commemorating Japan's war dead. The name Yasukuni, a quotation from Zuo Zhuan (a classical-era Chinese text), literally means "Pacifying the Nation" and was chosen by the Meiji Emperor.[8] The shrine has performed Shinto rites to house the kami (spirits) of all Japanese and former colonial subjects (Korean and Taiwanese) and civilians who died while participating in the nation's conflicts until the end of the US occupation of Japan in 1951.

Queen Elizabeth II meeting members of the Mohegan tribe at Southwark Cathedral in London, where she attended a funeral blessing to the young Mohegan chieftain (Sachem) Mohamet Weyonomon, who died in 1736. Although Mohamet died in the City of London, foreigners could not be buried there so he was laid to rest in an unmarked grave in the grounds of Southwark Cathedral.
