A Russian cat who received more votes than human candidates in an opinion poll about who should be mayor is now hoping to use his popularity to get his image on a new Ruble bill.
The feline candidate called Barsik was entered into an online poll about who should be the next mayor of Barnaul in south-central Russia.
Barsik was listed among the real potential candidates for the post by a local Internet group in December 2015.
More than two thousand people took part in the poll, with the fluffy candidate winning by a large margin against the other candidates.
Almost 90 percent of more than 2,000 people who participated in the poll cast their votes for the four-legged candidate.
Now Barsik is working on another initiative on his social network accounts. This one is called ‘Narodniy mer Barsik’ (People’s mayor Barsik).
He supposedly wrote: "Dear friends, you have voted for me to be mayor in the past. With your help I became an embodiment of change and moving forward, a symbol of courage, wit and resourcefulness. Today, I accepted the idea of my followers to get nominated to become a Russian national symbol."
Barsik wants his image to be put on either the 200 Ruble or the 2,000 Ruble bill that are to be launched by the Russian Central Bank.
Barsik added: "I really hope for your support. And remember, the only ones who do not support me are mice."
It is reported that Barsik has contacted the head of the Russian Central Bank to guarantee that he will not be disqualified from the online election.
