The Beauty Of Being Stranded In The Antarctic
It was the story that made headlines around the world as an expedition found itself stuck in Antarctic waters just before Christmas.

Reports of the eventual rescue after ten days stranded in pack ice were aided by the vibrant photography of expedition doctor Andrew Peacock.

Now, having arrived safely back in Queensland, Australia, on Wednesday (29 Jan), Dr Peacock has had time to reflect on his experience and select some of his favourite photographs from the expedition.

The 46-year-old was a member of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition (AAE) on board the M.V. Akademik Shokalskiy, a chartered Russian vessel beset in ice on 23 December.

Chinese Icebreaker Xue Long was unable to forge a path to extricate the Shokalskiy, but was able to send a helicopter to evacuate passengers to the Australian ship Aurora Australis.

Dr Peacock's pictures range from playful images of crew interaction with adelie penguins to a stunning artistic capture of the vessel's path through an "iceberg alley".

Speaking from his Queensland home, Dr Peacock explains: "I was asked to be the AAE doctor by a climbing friend, Greg Mortimer, one of Australia's most lauded mountaineers. In addition to working in expedition medicine and as an A&E and GP locum, I am an adventure travel photographer and as usual - and deliberately - on these trips I 'morph' into the expedition photographer, giving instruction and talks on photography to the clients.

"Being an expedition doctor can be a thankless task because I'm only useful when things go wrong and nobody wants that to happen so it's always been seen as a good...

George Takei is watched by Presenters Anthony McPartlin and Declan Donnelly during the Bushtucker Trial 'Bonanza'
'I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here' TV Programme, Australia - 05 Dec 2008
Former Star Trek actor George Takei had to endure a stomach churning Bushtucker Trial today in an effort to help win dinner for his fellow campmates. The 'I'm A Celeb' stars have to compete in these trials in order to collect stars; the more stars they collect the more food they earn for themselves and the rest of the camp. As part of the 'Bonanza' trial Takei was given a number of disgusting things to eat. To begin with he was presented with five dishes of his favourite food and five containing insects and was told that he would earn a star for every insect plate consumed. The actor went on to eat three live cockroaches, two live locusts, a Witchetty grub and a kangaroo penis. After chewing on the cockroaches Takei commented that they "tasted quite savoury and delicious". The only thing he didn't eat was a camel's testicle. However, his efforts were enough to win three main courses and a special beverage for himself and the other two finalists.

Martina Navratilova - Bushtucker Trial - 'Fill Your Face'
'I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here' TV Programme, Australia - 05 Dec 2008
Tennis ace Martina Navratilova had to endure a creepy crawly filled Bushtucker Trial today in an effort to win desert for her fellow campmates. The 'I'm A Celeb' stars have to compete in these trials in order to collect stars; the more stars they collect the more food they earn for themselves and the rest of the camp. As part of the 'Fill Your Face' trial Martina had to put her face into a large glass helmet, which was then filled with grasshoppers, cockroaches and two snakes. As the grasshoppers were poured in the 52-year-old remained calm; commenting that it was a "piece of cake so far". She then closed her eyes when the cockroaches were added, followed by stick insects, spiders and finally two snakes. However, the star was able to endure and was jubilant after winning five stars. "I did it!," she said afterwards. "They were biting me and they bit my nose and made me cry".

After chewing on the cockroaches Takei commented that they "tasted quite savoury and delicious". The only thing he didn't eat was a camel's testicle. However, his efforts were enough to win three main courses and a special beverage for himself and the other two finalists.

George Takei - Bushtucker Trial 'Bonanza'

Martina Navratilova - Bushtucker Trial - 'Wash And Cry'
'I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here' TV Programme, Australia - 03 Dec 2008
Martina Navratilova had to get down and dirty in the jungle today when she volunteered for a Bushtucker Trial. Fellow celeb George Takei misread the name of the trial as the harmless sounding 'Wash and Dry' instead of the correct name 'Wash and Cry'. So the 52-year-old was horrified to learn that as part of the challenge she had to jump into a washtub of foul smelling mud, including rotten fish guts, in order to search for items of clothing with stars on them. After finding a starred item she had to put it on, climb out of the tub, and pull herself along a set of rollers for a wringing. She then had to crawl down a net, take off the item and hang it on a washing line. When asked if she wanted to back out, Martina said: "I (FOTO:DUKAS/REX)

Former tennis legend Martina Navratilova was elected by her fellow celebrity camp mates to take on the latest Bushtucker Trial, Carnage. The task involved Martina, who had been desperate to take on her first trial, crossing five Minis suspended above a creek in order to gain stars that would be exchanged for food for the camp. The added suspense came from the fact that each car was dropped into the muddy water after a certain amount of time, meaning Martina had to work against the clock. Nevertheless, the sporting champion showed her mettle in the challenge, successfully retrieving all ten stars; a perfect result. Martina Navratilova - Bushtucker Trial - 'Carnage'
'I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here' TV Programme, Australia - 28 Nov 2008
As she made her way back to camp Martina clearly elated by her victory said (FOTO:DUKAS/REX)
