Bloodied, despondent, clutching a toy: the Ukrainian artists savaging refugee portrait stereotypes
For Ukraine's entry in this year's Venice Biennale, two artists asked refugees to help them create an 'acceptable' portrait of a woman ravaged by war. We meet the team behind an astonishing project.
Actor SASKIA PAY (29 from Levenshulme) sits as she is dressed and styled. Poland-based Ukrainian artist Andrii Dostliev works with Ukrainian refugees living in Liverpool to dress and stage a video portrait of a Ukrainian stereotype, performed by British actor Saskia Pay. The video, shot at the Open Eye Gallery in Liverpool City Centre, is one of a series to be exhibited later in the year, which explores how the media portrays Ukrainians.
