A superyacht has been deliberately sunk to the bottom of the ocean — to become a living eco-system for divers to explore.

The 38 metre Time , launched in 1988, will benefit coral and reef fish along Florida’s Atlantic coast in the USA.

The yacht has been scuttled near Fort Pierce by the US based environmental conservation group Marine Cleanup Initiative, known as MCI.

The 254 ton vessel was stripped down to just an aluminium skeleton without engines or interior fitting in preparation for the event.

MCI operations director Christa Stone said: “The more we are being more proactive and preventative at trying to maintain the sustainability out here, we have a greater chance at a healthier ecosystem.”

Coral reefs around the world are experiencing bleaching because of stronger UV rays from the sun.

Stone said the shade provided by the sunken yacht and others will help reduce temperatures on the ocean floor, allowing coral to thrive and providing researchers with the opportunity to study environmental impacts on coral.
