Large signs warning members of the public to the dangers of barbecues and open fires on a parched Box Hill, Surrey today as weather forecasters predict another heatwave to hit England this week with highs of 35c expected. Experts fear that London could soon be placed under a hosepipe ban after Kent and Sussex formerly declared a ban from 12th August. 02/08/2022. London, UK.
Horse riders trot past a ‘Fire Risk’ warning sign in a parched Richmond Park south-west London today as experts fear that England could be facing a drought this August after record breaking temperatures hit 40.3c last month. Millions of people could face a hosepipe ban this summer as weather experts reveal that July was the driest in over 100 years with no sight of any significant rain due for London and the South East.

No water. Little food. Shelters made of clothes: inside Somalia’s Bulo Garas camp
The failure of the fourth rainy season in a row has left millions facing hunger, especially in the countryÕs hard-hit south-west with growing numbers seeking refuge in humanitarian camps.
Earlier this year, the UN described Somalia as Òstaring at a potential catastropheÓ after three consecutive failed rainy seasons. Now that a fourth rainy season has failed, the drought has worsened. This week the UN warned that only a massive and immediate injection of funding would avert famine in Somalia.

In May last year there were 119 admissions. That shot up nearly three-fold, to 324 in May this year. Last month also saw a dramatic increase just from the preceding month (March), when 193 children were admitted, showing the pace at which the crisis is escalating. On 7th June when we visited, 123 children had already been admitted this month. If that rate continues June will see another significant increase on May. Tragically, the number of children whose condition when they arrive is so severe that they donÕt survive is also increasing. Last year 23 children died at the centre. This year sixteen have already passed away in the five months to the end of May and the number is rising, from two in March, to four in April, to eight in May alone. There is no more space in the centre and the team there have been forced to set up wards in tents outside.
