Melilla fortress
Melilla, Spain, January 15, 2011
Mohammed and Jahid, two immigrants from India, are watching over the Strait of Gibraltar from the old fortress of the Spanish enclave of Melilla. They spent 5 years waiting for a laissez-passer to the Spanish mainland. Melilla became part of Spain in 1580, and is, along with the Spanish city of Ceuta, the only landborder between the EU and the African continent. A giant fence and a range of border security measures closes the Spanish city off from Moroccan soil, to stop the influx of African immigrants. Throughout 2010 only 1000 new immigrants arrived in Melilla. (FOTO:DUKAS/REPORTERS)
