Ousted President Saddam Hussein smiles during the first day of the Anfal trial in Baghdad's heavily fortified Green Zone. The Anfal campaign of the late 1980s, for which Saddam and six others went on trial today, capped decades of hostility between Iraqi Kurds and Saddam's regime. Saddam was charged with genocide, nearly two decades after his forces swept through the villages of the Kurdish north, slaughtering as they went. The defiant former strongman, who maintained his claim to be "President of the Republic of Iraq", refused to enter a plea and the judge ordered that one of "innocent" be entered in the record
