Suzy and Charlie now (PA Real Life/Collect) *** Mum has no recollection of her wedding day or
giving birth to her son after a rare brain bug erased
her memory
By Erin Cardiff, PA Real Life
A happily married mum cannot remember her wedding day or giving birth to her son after
a terrifying brain bug erased the precious memories - maybe forever.
In robust health when she started having headaches in the spring of 2017, Suzy Owen,
36, of Woking, Surrey, who then worked at an opticians, simply expect ed them to lift.
But life with her police officer husband Paul, 38, and their boy, Charlie, six, changed in an
instant, after a seizure in the street on May 16 led to a diagnosis of encephalitis - a rare
but serious inflammation of the brain, usually occurring when the immune system attacks
itself in error.
Paul remembers calling his wife, who was out with their son, then three, only for a
paramedic to answer her phone.

to call Suzy and tell her I was on my way home, like I usually did.
A paramedic answered and told me she had collapsed in the street, and was having
seizures.
At first, I thought it was some sort of horrible prank, but I soon realised it was very real.
Family swooped in to take care of Charlie, as Suzy, who has no recollection of these
traumatic events, was raced to St Peter's Hospital in Chertsey, Surrey, where Paul joined
her.
At first, unsure whether she had meningitis or encephalitis, Suzy - who was diagnosed
with the latter in the early hours of the next morning - was later placed in an induced
coma for three long months, to help her body to recover.
Coming round to find her long-term memory had been severely impacted, she had lost all
recollection of the two most important events of her life - her son's birth on 1 January,
2014 and her 25 August, 2007 wedding day.
