US TRANSPORT SHIP USS WAKEFIELD ON FIRE AT SEA
Though fire swept through the US transport ship "Wakefield", while it was returning to port with a convoy, there was no trace of panic among the 1600 passengers and crew.
The Wakefield, which was formerly the luxury liner SS Manhattan, has been salvaged, and is now in an Atlantic port.

WOMEN AND CHILDREN FIRST - THE QUEEN MARY CONVERTED INTO A COMFORT SHIP FOR G.I. BRIDES AND BABIES.
Work goes on apace on the Queen Mary, as she lies in dry dock at Southampton, converting her from a trooper into a luxury ship to take G.I. brides and their babies to America. As a troopship she used to carry as many as 15,000 men aboard. As a "brides and babies" ship, she will carry 2500 passengers. Nurses and stewardesses will be added to her crew, and special nursery arrangements are being contrived aboard, to ensure that the English wives of American troops make a comfortable voyage with their families to the country of their adoption.

U.S. Navy 'swim calls' - 2016
When you're job is sailing the seas, the World is your swimming pool.
These amazing pictures show sailors and marines from the U.S. Navy taking part in what they call 'swim calls'.
Most recently pictured earlier this month (Feb) are those cooling off by jumping from into the Indian Ocean from guided-missile cruiser USS Antietam.
With the ship anchored, Swim Calls are seen as a refreshing break from the job of keeping high-tech battleships running.
The activity often occurs in warm foreign waters, such as the Mediterranean, Arabian and South China seas, the Indian and Pacific oceans.
Suffice to say, there will be people tasked with shark watch, from the ship and rigid-hulled inflatable boats.
Swimmers are able to clamber back onto the ship via landing docks or by climbing cargo nets.

'Anna Nicole' Opera at The Royal Opera House, London, Britain - 14 Feb 2011
A new opera based on the life of tabloid queen Anna Nicole Smith has opened at Royal Opera House in London. Created by Mark-Anthony Turnage, the production is described as "a celebrity story of our times that includes extreme language, drug abuse and sexual content". It follows Anna Nicole's rags-to-ruches rise from from topless dancer to heiress - marrying oil tycoon J. Howard Marshall, who was 63 years her senior, in 1994 - via Playboy and reality TV. Dutch soprano Eva-Maria Westbroek - acclaimed for her performances in Wagner - plays Smith, with baritone Gerald Finley as her lawyer-turned-boyfriend, Howard K. Stern.

Diver Alex Mustard photographs undersea ship wrecks across world - Feb 2011
Mandatory Credit: Photo by Alexander Mustard/Solent News / Rex Features ( 1288392k )
Such Curious Things To Sea
An intrepid British photographer has travelled the world snapping pictures of the bizarre things lying on the sea bed.
Diving enthusiast Alex Mustard, 36, has made many strange discoveries while exploring 40 feet beneath the water's surface.
His pictures, taken while investigating the insides of eerie shipwrecks, include barnacle-covered motorbikes once meant for British troops fighting during World War Two.
Rusty British trucks also lie forgotten in their watery graves along with rifles that have never been used.
And one extraordinary photo even shows the shell of the iconic VW Beetle car, now abandoned in the gloom of the murky water.
Alex, from Southampton, Hants, said: "Wrecks attract divers because of the incongruity of seeing something from above the waves beneath them.
"The VW Beetle was purposely sunk for divers and it's particularly bizarre - it's the last thing you would expect to sea underwater.
"I find it fascinating seeing something familiar in an alien place - underwater.
"I couldn't say how many wrecks I've seen but each is interesting in their own way. Each is unique, the features different on every wreck and the atmosphere varies too."
One particularly fascinating wreck for Alex is the HMS Thislegorm - a British cargo ship that was carrying military supplies when it was sunk by a German bomber in the Red Sea in 1941.
Alex said: "This wreck is still packed with trucks, bikes and rifles.
"War wrecks are always the most sombre; I find they are not only museums but also memorials.
"And I always have mixed feeling of excitement and sadness when exploring them. It is an intense experience on so many levels."
Alex has explored wrecks both old and new.
His most recent, the USS Kittiwake, a US military ship built...

Emperor Penguins, Snow Hill, Antarctica. Paul says: "Way down in Antarctica on the eastern peninsular I was stuck in the ice for a week along with 100 people. Off the stern of the ship we watched Emperor penguins on their migratory routes. You had to gamble where they were going to come up so virtually impossible to get the shot, but once one had jumped you could bet the others would follow, in this instance 'more is more' - this was the only time three jumped simultaneously."

With Saturday (25 April) being World Penguin Day, wildlife photographer Paul Goldstein has shared some of his favourite pictures of the aquatic, flightless birds.
Wimbledon-based Paul, who guides for Exodus Travels, has led many expeditions to the poles on small ice-breakers, so has had great opportunites to document penguin behaviour.
He explains: "I love the polar bears of the North but there is something magical about the penguins down South that entrance me. Yes it can be a mission to get there but it is palpably worth it.

Flights of Fancy: Paul Goldstein's 'In The Air' Wildlife Photography
For photographers, capturing animals in the wild is an art that can take years to master.
But wildlife photographer Paul Goldstein has taken his work to new heights by shooting animals frozen in the air as they leap.
His work sees stunning images showing jumping animals ranging from wildebeest to polar bears.
They include a dramatic flying fight between a baboon and a leopard and the cute, bouncy interaction between a pair of serval kittens.
Paul explains: "Mammals and indeed penguins cannot fly, it would be a physiological miracle if it occurred, but it is wonderful to see them try. It also is rare, which is why I like photographing it as it is a huge challenge. If the shot is successful it always elicits a good response.
"For the money shot there must be no part of the animal attached to a tree/branch/ice or rock. It does not matter if it is an 'air's breath' away, but just nothing touching.
"Air looms high on my agenda, I am obsessed by it, it is exciting photography and frequently original."
Describing the moment the baboon ambushed the leopard, Paul says: "Prime Mates? I don't think so, these are mortal enemies and a whole troop of baboons had 'treed' this young male leopard in the Masai Mara.
"Eventually they left, except one male that waited for the predators descent and jumped out at him. It gave the leopard a good dry slap then the leopard legged it and vaporised in seconds as is their wont.
"Whilst leopards will sometimes kill single baboons, they will avoid whole troops assiduously as they can turn on them. One of my favourite ever photos."
