How do you get a 48 tonne truck to a construction site 2,000 metres above sea level when there are no roads?
The development of the Nant de Drance power plant in the Swiss Alps has seen engineers transporting heavy vehicles via a heavy duty cable railway.
Ten Allison Transmission Astra HD8 excavator trucks are needed for processing excavated material from tunnel and power plant caverns.
Niklaus Zaugg, mechanical engineer of the Groupement Marti Implenia, whose task it was to select the trucks, says: "Our site is 2,000 metres above sea level and the access route in winter is impassible. For this reason, we work from April to November, 24 hours a day, on three shifts."
