Italy's picturesque villages struggle to cope with deluge of Insta-visitors
The five villages of the Cinque Terre are determined to ensure the once sleepy area is not overwhelmed by mass tourism.

There was a time when Manarola's year-round population, which has dwindled over the years to about 350, could take a peaceful afternoon nap.

From Venice and Dubrovnik to Bali and Alaska, managing mass tourism is a dilemma facing many popular global destinations. In Italy, 2023 was a record year, with foreigners making up the vast majority of visitors for the first time since before the coronavirus pandemic.

Amsterdam welcomes decline of nuisance tourism after 'stay away' drive
Some locals say number of stag party-type visitors is down after campaign targeting young Britons.

There is some evidence that high times are ending for partying Britons, whose stag and hen nights have become a byword for tourist nuisance in Amsterdamís red light district.

Earlier this year, the municipality made headlines with an extraordinary "dissuasion" campaign targeting British men aged 18 to 34. A search for terms such as "stag night" or "cheap hotel Amsterdam" was a trigger for dire government adverts warning that a messy night taking drugs and getting trashed in the Dutch capital could lead to a Ä140 fine, a criminal record and permanent health damage.

Although many Dutch pundits were critical of the campaign, research by the travel industry analyst ForwardKeys based on the International Air Transport Association (IATA) ticketing database suggests it may be working
