  • Potato Sprout - Solanine Poisoning
    DUKAS_189754975_NUR
    Potato Sprout - Solanine Poisoning
Potato sprouts grow from dormant ''eyes'' on a potato tuber under favorable conditions such as light, warmth, and moisture. These shoots can be planted to produce new potatoes. Sprouted potatoes may contain elevated levels of the toxin solanine, which can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headaches, confusion, low blood pressure, and, in severe cases, neurological issues or death if consumed in large amounts. Potatoes with visible sprouts are seen inside a house in Tehatta, West Bengal, India, on October 8, 2025. (Photo by Soumyabrata Roy/NurPhoto)

Two magnificent plane trees planted by the Queens great, great grandparents Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. straddle a path in the garden at Buckingham Palace
'The Queen's Green Planet' TV show - Apr 2018
This unique, landmark documentary follows Queen Elizabeth II and an ambitious legacy project to create a global network of protected forests, spanning the 52 countries of the Commonwealth. This project, called the Queen's Commonwealth Canopy, brings together Her Majesty's deeply held commitment to the Commonwealth and her little-known love of trees. At the heart of the film is a conversation between the Queen and Sir David Attenborough filmed in the gardens of Buckingham Palace last summer. In a rare opportunity to see the Queen talking informally to Sir David, the conversation ranges from climate change, to conkers and birthday gifts. The film follows members of the Royal Family involved so far in making the Queen's Commonwealth Canopy a reality, including Prince Harry planting trees in the Caribbean, and Prince William and his family in Canada's Great Bear Rainforest

A memorial tree planted in honour of George Harrison has been overrun ... by beetles.

The tree was planted at Griffith Park in Los Angeles in 2004 in memory of the former Beatle.

At the base of the tree is a small plaque which reads: "In memory of a great humanitarian who touched the world as an artist, a musician and a gardener."

It also quotes Harrison: "For the forests to be green, each tree must be green."

However, it has now been infested by a rather less musical form of beetle and will have to be replanted.

Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall Tour of East Asia, Brunei - 31 Oct 2008
During a trip to Brunei today the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall met with Gurkha soldiers and the Sultan of Brunei. Charles and Camilla are currently on a 10-day tour of East Asia tour, which has already taken them to Japan. After arriving in Brunei the royal couple paid a visit to Gurkha troops, some of whom served alongside Prince Harry in Afghanistan, stationed at the British Garrison in Seria. Later Charles travelled to Badas to learn about the Heart of Borneo initiative, which aims to preserve 220,000 square kilometres (85,000 square miles) of rainforest. In the evening the Prince and Duchess attended an audience with the Sultan of Brunei, one of the world's richest men. A state banquet attended by the Sultan and his two wives was held in their honour.

It is census time in Sydney's Royal Botanic Gardens. But it is not humans who are being counted. It is the furry winged invaders that occupied the green sanctuary during the drought and have turned it into their inner-city squat. A year ago, said Tim Entwisle, the executive director of the Botanic Gardens Trust, it was thought the gardens were home to about 11,000 grey-headed flying foxes. Now, he suspects, there could be twice that many. "They are slowly trashing the place," he said. Branches have been breaking under their weight and their urine and droppings have been poisoning plants. "They are destroying the palm grove," said Dr Entwisle. "They are killing the trees. We have had 12 trees die and 45 are on the critical list. A couple on the critical list were planted in the 1820s."Although the new count, being undertaken by volunteers, will not be completed for several weeks, Dr Entwisle expects it will confirm that previous estimates of the flying fox population have been wildly underestimated. Among trees under threat is a flowering ash that was almost killed by the drought. In the 1990s, flying fox numbers were dramatically reduced by staff bashing metal lids, frightening the animals away. Now the gardens trust is seeking government permission to resume the evictions, possibly using mobile loud speakers on buggies to disturb them. Dr Entwisle said the evictions, if approved, would probably not begin until autumn next year, after the next breeding season. "The welfare of the flying foxes is important to us."

Ernst and Nelly Hofer have planted a giant maze on their farm for the last five years. This year it's a world map. One step in the maze is equal to 70 kilometres on the earth. Laid out with GPS, the landmasses are feed corn and the oceans are soybeans. They will harvest the map at the end of the season, the corn as cattle feed and beans go into the usual soy products. Visitors wander through the paths and answer geographic trivia questions at each intersection.

On December 2, 2021, Nanjing City, Jiangsu Province, the Zhongshan Scenic Area of ‚Ä‚ÄNanjing in the early winter season is full of forests, colorful and picturesque. From the air, the yellowed sycamore leaves on the cemetery road are like a string of Meiling Palace. "Golden Necklace" is so beautiful, ushering in the most beautiful viewing moment of the year.
Viewed from the air through a drone, rows of platanus trees form a collar. The Meiling Palace in Xuanwu District of Nanjing is like a gem inlaid at the end of the necklace, quietly nestling at the foot of the Purple Mountain. There are folk rumors that the Meiling Palace was a "birthday gift" from Chiang Kai-shek to Soong Meiling. Netizens called this "the world's best necklace" as Jiang Gong's romantic confession to his beloved wife. It is understood that the trees forming the "necklace" on the cemetery road were not planted in the same period.
According to records, the earliest construction budget of Meiling Palace was 260,000 silver dollars, but in the end it actually spent 320,000 silver dollars. The money was first advanced by the Army, Navy and Air Force Command, and later the Nanjing Municipal Finance Bureau also contributed part of the advance. The financial pit left by Meiling Palace for the two departments was finally filled by Chiang Kai-shek with the reimbursement of the total reserve fund of the state finance.

Due to disrepair, Meiling Palace started repairs in December 2012 and was completed in September 2013. The rows of fatons are layered on top of each other, and the shape is like a necklace, which is very spectacular. Netizens called it "the most awesome necklace in the world." These necklace-shaped platanus trees were not planted at the same time. The Fatong that forms the "collar" on the cemetery avenue was planted during the construction of the Zhongshan Cemetery from 1925 to 1929, and the Fatong that formed a "pendant" ..
