The ruins of the Sanctuary of Artemis at Brauron
March 23, 2012 - Vravrona, Greece: The Sanctuary of Artemis at Brauron. Remains found here suggests this site was occupied since Neolithic times, 2000-1600BC. Since 1945 remains of the Sanctuary of Artemis has been uncovered and restored. "In Mycenaean times the goddess Artemis was known here as Artemis Iphigeneia; and according to Euripides Iphigeneia, daughter of king Agamemnon of Mycenae, was a priestess at Brauron after her return from the Tauric Chersonesos until her death. During the Classical period Athenian girls aged between five to 10 served in the sanctuary. They were known as "little bears" (arktoi) from the saffron-colored garments they wore, recalling a she-bear sacred to Artemis." (Rob Schoenbaum / Polaris) (FOTO:DUKAS/POLARIS)

A votive statue found atop a column at the sanctuary depicting in lifelike detail a young boy who once lived at the sanctuary. Scholars believe this boy may have had Downs Syndrome.
