Scottish Elizabeth Harrison 'Galanthus woronowii' snowdrop bulb becomes most expensive ever sold, Britain - 16 Feb 2012
Mandatory Credit: Photo by Geoffrey Robinson / Rex Features (1617404b)
Why So Grumpy, Petal?
A rare snowdrop is looking rather glum today after a rival variety beat it to become the most expensive snowdrop bulb ever sold.
The distinctive Galanthus elwesii 'grumpy' snowdrop, which has two eyes and a turned-down mouth etched on its petals, sells for around GBP 100 a bulb.
However, now a single bulb of the Scottish Elizabeth Harrison 'Galanthus woronowii' snowdrop variety has sold for a whopping GBP 725.10 on Internet auction site eBay.
With snowdrops suddenly becoming so valuable many collectors are now hiring security guards or using tags to protect their rare species, which are becoming increasingly popular.
An increasing number of galanthopiles - snowdrop collectors - are willing to pay hundreds of pounds for the small white flowers, which first became fashionable in the mid-19th Century.
The stunning Scottish Elizabeth Harrison snowdrop arose as a seedling in a Scottish garden a few years back and is named after its owner.
It has not been identified anywhere else, which is why it is so sought after.
The record breaking bulb was sold on eBay by Ian Christie, a nurseryman in Scotland, and attracted more than 30 bidders.
It was fellow galanthopile Joe Sharman, owner of Monksilver Nursery in Cambridge, who first discovered the distinctive Galanthus elwesii 'grumpy' snowdrop.
He stumbled across it in the garden of Sir Vivian Fuchs in Cambridge 20 years ago.
Joe now grows the flowers in a secret location near the city, which he will not reveal for fear of theft of the valuable plants.
He comments: "I found a species in the garden of Sir Vivian Fuchs at Wolfson College in 1990 and developed it from there. I rescued as much as I could.
"One of the flowers that came from the species I named Mr Blobby and the next one Mr Grumpy. It's just a fun name and eve...

New 3D Coffee Art by Kazuki Yamamoto
Would you like a biscuit with your coffee? How about a giraffe, three-eyed alien or Salvador Dali-esque melting clock?
Nimble-fingered barista Kazuki Yamamoto previously wowed the world of caffeine fans with his 'flat white' pictures on coffees.
Now the talented 26-year-old has brewed-up a whole series of three-dimensional designs in coffee froth.
Kazuki perks up customers at his coffee shop in Osaka, Japan by using his nimble skills to make cheerful images on top of the drinks. Amazingly, he has notched up over 2,000 of the mini masterpieces.
He explains: "I've been working in the cafe from the age of 20, but I started the design cappuccino two years ago.
"I use a cocktail pin and spoon, steamed milk and delicious espresso. I have been practicing at the end of the working day and during breaks. It has become what I am known for when customers come to the shop.
"I do about 3 cups a day and estimate that I have drawn about 2000 types ever.
"However, there is a drawback; the coffees can get cold because it takes time to do the more delicate designs."

Cat Emotion portraits by Andrew Marttila, Philadelphia, America - Aug 2015
FULL COPY: http://www.rexfeatures.com/nanolink/qut7
What is your cat thinking when it looks at you?
These amazing portraits seem to show a range of emotions, according to photographer Andrew Marttila.
The 29-year-old Philadelphia-based pet photographer and self proclaimed "crazy cat man" says: "This series on emotions is to disprove the stereotype that cats are cold and aloof.
"I want to show that cats are capable of a range of emotion, from serious to silly and everything in between."
He has captioned his images with the cat's name and what he believes they were feeling when the portrait was taken.
Examples include a cat called Una displaying 'innocence', Pudge looking 'exhausted' and Grendel appearing to be 'seething' after getting snow on its head.

Grumpy Cat poses for Madame Tussauds figure makers
Madame Tussauds to make a Grumpy Cat figure, San Francisco, America - 27 Aug 2015
Madame Tussauds San Francisco is delighted to announce that irreverent Internet sensation Grumpy Cat will be the first ever cat to be immortalised in the attraction's history. In step with her digital celebrity, her figure will be an animatronic with five different movements.
"This is truly an honour?" 'said' a distinctly unimpressed Grumpy Cat. "I hate it."
Grumpy Cat shot to stardom when her photo was posted on Reddit on September 22, 2012. To dispel suspicions that the image had been Photoshopped, she posted two videos to YouTube. The videos went viral, making her the darling of meme-loving macro-makers everywhere.
Grumpy Cat will be unveiled at Madame Tussauds? San Francisco location later this year in typically aloof fashion by Grumpy Cat herself. After a short stay at Madame Tussauds San Francisco, the animatronic will tour the remaining five Madame Tussauds attractions across the US.

Like human beings, cats can experience a variety of emotions.
A photographer has captured images of her cat's expressions, ranging from bemused, angry, grumpy and hungry.
Imogen the cat is owned by television editor Casey Christopher.
Casey said: "I adopted Imogen in December of 2013 and have been photographing her daily ever since.
"She's become a really good model and will even meow on command. When she hears the bag of treats open, she comes running and knows it is time to work. She's very expressive and self-confident and I love that about her."
Casey shoots with a Nikon D800 and a 35 mm lens.
She added: "I like the focus to be on her face so recently I've begun shooting her in front of a backdrop."
