    View upon the Gallipoli pensinsula. The text on the hill is a quote by the Turkish poet, Necmettin Halil Onan. It says: Traveller halt! The soil you tread once witnessed the end of an era. It refers to the Gallipoli Campaign. This military campaign took place in the Ottoman Empire in 1915 and 1916 during the first World War. A joint British and French operation was mounted to capture the Ottoman capital of Constantinople and secure a sea route to Russia. The attempt failed, with heavy casualties on both sides.
