  • REPORTAGE - Malaysia: Die Insel Penang

REPORTAGE - Malaysia: Die Insel Penang
March 19, 2017 - Tanjung Tokong, Penang, Malaysia: Fisherman Mr Kamaruddin, 70, is fixing his net on the beach next to his home. Land reclamation for infrastructure projects and property are becoming more widespread in Asia. On Penang Island, schemes are increasing, especially to build high class housing. The projects require large volumes of building materials, especially sand, and have an impact on the environment, especially marine biodiversity. The livelihoods of local fishermen are particularly impacted. Driven by high demand for housing, developers in Malaysia's Penang Island are artificially expanding the coastline and planning to construct new islands. Local fishermen say building works have already damaged their livelihoods, and fear further construction will destroy their fishing grounds. Mangroves and endangered bird species are also threatened, and the mining and transport of construction materials could spread adverse environmental impacts beyond just Penang. REPORTAGE - Malaysia: Die Insel Penang
March 19, 2017 - Tanjung Tokong, Penang, Malaysia: A horseshoe crab in a tank at Tanjung Tokong. Until five years ago, fisherman Mr Kamaruddin used to keep crabs in a net in the sea but then they started to die from the muddy sediment in the water stirred up by reclamation construction work. March 19, 2017 - Tanjung Tokong, Penang, Malaysia: Two fisher women eat lunch in their living compound behind the only natural beach remaining in the area. The livelihoods of local fishermen are particularly impacted by big land reclamation schemes taking place around them. MAIN ISLAND MALE AND HULULE AIRPORT, NORTH MALE ATOLL, MALDIVES
MALE, the metropolis and population-centre of the Maldives, is hopelessly overcrowded with houses, over 800 cars and thousands of mopeds, bicycles and boats. The population is officially put at 80,000. It is the only urban settlement in this island state, the nerve-centre of politics, commerce, religion and culture. On an adjacent island, just a few minutes away by boat, lies the airport, the only link with the modern world. (FOTO: DUKAS/MICHAEL FRIEDEL)
