A fledging dunnock photographed at the Folly Wildlife Rescue Centre in Sussex, UK. Dunnocks (Prunella modularis), often called hedge sparrows, are charasmatic little birds. Always on the move, always interested, the youngsters are plucky little birds with a great expressive face as this one shows.

An adorable project shows the baby birds of Britain in the first days of their lives.

Wildlife photographer Gavin Parsons has worked closely with UK rescue centres to capture chicks bought in for care.

He has spent the last three years photographing some of the baby birds bought into Folly Wildlife Rescue in Sussex and the RSPCA Wildlife Rescue Centre West Hatch in Somerset.

Each year hundreds of hatchlings are bought to rescue centres either after their nests have been disturbed or when they have been mistakenly picked up by well-meaning members of the public after they have fledged.

A juvenile goldfinch photographed at the RSPCA wildlife Rescue centre at West Hatch, Somerset. One of the UK's prettiest birds, the goldfinch (Carduelis carduelis) is a stunning creature. The young don't have the characteristic reds and golds of the parents, but they are cheeky in interested little birds. This individual posed for the pictures looking around like a professional model and stayed in place for the few minutes of the shoot.

A baby robin photographed at Folly Wildlife Rescue Centre.
Robins (Erithacus rubecula) are often the nation's ,most favourite birds. They are a gardeners companion and their sweet song fills the gardens and city streets with wonderful music. They are birds full of character as this cheeky chap demonstrates.

A pair of baby chaffinches photographed at the Folly Wildlife Rescue Centre. The chaffinch (Fringilla coelebs) is one of Europe's most common birds. They are found in a vast range of habitats., which is why they do so well. They are also gregarious birds, which is why they prefer the company of others.

A young jackdaw photographed at RSPCA Wildlife hospital West Hatch in Somerset. Jackdaw (Corvus monedula) are small corvids (crows). They are intelligent and squabblesome birds. Their brightness and inquisitiveness can be seen on the face of this juvenile.

A house sparrow photographed at Folly Wildlife Rescue Centre, Sussex, UK. House sparrows (Passer domesticus) used to be one of our commonest birds. However they are in a steep decline, so each one is precious. This one, although demanding will help increase the population. It constantly called for food, even though it had just been fed before this picture was taken.

The biggest swan round up in the UK
The biggest swan round up in the UK has just taken place early this morning(sat) at the Fleet nature Reserve in Dorset. (collective noun: a lamentation of swans or herd).

Some 500 wild swans were corralled and slowly driven to a landing point at The Abbotsbury Swannery at the end of the waterway that lies just inside Chesil Beach on the Jurassic coast. Hundreds of volunteers of all ages walked to nearly waist deep in order to help keep the swans moving in the right direction.

The giant birds at this time of year are mainly flightless due to them moulting their feathers so they can be very carefully encouraged up the shallow tidal water to a place where a team of handlers can examine, weigh and ring the birds.
