Empty Boxes Are Baby Lions' Favourite Present
When it comes to Christmas presents young children are often just as fascinated with the empty box - as these adorable lion cubs prove.

The seven-month old Asiatic lions from Paignton Zoo were eager to rip open their presents and weren't even disappointed that there was nothing inside.

The four cubs - two males and two females - were born in May to mother Indu and father Mwamba.

The girls are called Maliya and Zarina and the boys Jari and Sabal.

The parcels were made and painted by volunteers at the Zoo, which is a registered charity.

After they were placed in their enclosure the four little lions seemed a little tentative at first.

However, they soon overcame their shyness and went for it under mum's watchful eye.

Paignton Zoo spokesperson Phil Knowling said: "We remove the sticky tape and staples from the boxes, cover them in plain paper and paint them with food colouring, so they are safe.

"We call this sort of thing environmental enrichment - it is what you do when you give your dog or cat a toy at home, but we have to scale our ideas up for lions and tigers!"

So what will the cubs be getting Christmas this year? Raw meat.

The foursome started trying meat when they were around 3 months and are now pretty much fully-weaned.

Senior keeper Lucy Manning: "They get fed joints of beef, whole dead chickens and rabbits. The cubs like the rabbit carcasses as they are more their size. Indu and the cubs get fed together - it's a lot of food these days!"

Asiatic lions (Panthera leo persica) are threatened by hunting and habitat destruction and fewer than 400 survive in the wild in the Gir National Park in India.

There are conservation breeding programmes in zoos including a European Endangered species Programme (EEP).

Emily Blunt Teaches Jonathan Ross And John Bishop A Thing Or Two About Chopping Wood
Emily Blunt talks about a possible sequel to The Devil Wears Prada; Sir Michael Gambon reveals how he misses playing Dumbledore in the Harry Potter films and what it's like working with Maggie Smith; DJ David Guetta talks about DJ'ing in three counties in one day and John Bishop talks about Sports Relief and support from David Walliams.

Emily Blunt on a possible sequel to The Devil Wears Prada

British actress Emily Blunt made a name for herself after playing Meryl Streep's paranoid assistant in The Devil Wears Prada. But will there be a sequel to the film?

"Well people are talking about it, " says Emily when Jonathan asks about a possible second film. "I hear there's another book that's been written, so I don't know if it's going to happen. I think if everyone came back, but I heard Meryl in an interview the other day and they were like, 'would you do it Meryl?' and she went, 'sure if I didn't have to lose the f**king weight.' She hated it, the starvation we went through. We had to be really small," explains Emily.

Emily on her latest role in the film Looper

In the film Looper, Emily plays a character who lives on her own on a farm and in order to make the part believable, Emily was forced to learn a new skill.

"I had to learn how to chop wood really convincingly," Emily explains. The actress has the opportunity to show off her wood chopping skills on The Jonathan Ross as an axe and wood are brought into the studio and she gives Jonathan and fellow guest John Bishop a quick lesson on splitting the wood.

Flights of Fancy: Paul Goldstein's 'In The Air' Wildlife Photography
For photographers, capturing animals in the wild is an art that can take years to master.

But wildlife photographer Paul Goldstein has taken his work to new heights by shooting animals frozen in the air as they leap.

His work sees stunning images showing jumping animals ranging from wildebeest to polar bears.

They include a dramatic flying fight between a baboon and a leopard and the cute, bouncy interaction between a pair of serval kittens.

Paul explains: "Mammals and indeed penguins cannot fly, it would be a physiological miracle if it occurred, but it is wonderful to see them try. It also is rare, which is why I like photographing it as it is a huge challenge. If the shot is successful it always elicits a good response.

"For the money shot there must be no part of the animal attached to a tree/branch/ice or rock. It does not matter if it is an 'air's breath' away, but just nothing touching.

"Air looms high on my agenda, I am obsessed by it, it is exciting photography and frequently original."

Describing the moment the baboon ambushed the leopard, Paul says: "Prime Mates? I don't think so, these are mortal enemies and a whole troop of baboons had 'treed' this young male leopard in the Masai Mara.

"Eventually they left, except one male that waited for the predators descent and jumped out at him. It gave the leopard a good dry slap then the leopard legged it and vaporised in seconds as is their wont.

"Whilst leopards will sometimes kill single baboons, they will avoid whole troops assiduously as they can turn on them. One of my favourite ever photos."

Regarding the polar bear cubs in Spitsbergen, Paul says: "What a morning. Seven polar bears in four hours many nautical miles from land in Spitsbergen. These two cub...

Emperor Penguins, Snow Hill, Antarctica. Paul says: "Way down in Antarctica on the eastern peninsular I was stuck in the ice for a week along with 100 people. Off the stern of the ship we watched Emperor penguins on their migratory routes. You had to gamble where they were going to come up so virtually impossible to get the shot, but once one had jumped you could bet the others would follow, in this instance 'more is more' - this was the only time three jumped simultaneously."

With Saturday (25 April) being World Penguin Day, wildlife photographer Paul Goldstein has shared some of his favourite pictures of the aquatic, flightless birds.

Wimbledon-based Paul, who guides for Exodus Travels, has led many expeditions to the poles on small ice-breakers, so has had great opportunites to document penguin behaviour.

He explains: "I love the polar bears of the North but there is something magical about the penguins down South that entrance me. Yes it can be a mission to get there but it is palpably worth it.

But later on she (figuratively) let down her hair and kicked off her heels at an after party held by GQ at 34 Restaurant in Mayfair when she took to the dance floor with co-star Michael Fassbender. The pair showed off some serious moves as they twirled across the floor, with Michael even bending Keira back for the perfect dip. And Keira certainly seemed to be enjoying the attention - grinning throughout the experience. But with her other co-star Viggo Mortensen clearly feeling left out, Keira found herself sidelined as he and Michael slow danced together. The party's other guests then took to the floor with Michael at one point even showing off his piano playing skills. Meanwhile, Keira got cosy with her boyfriend of 12 months James Righton.

Stephen Hawking. The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists (BAS) will move the minute hand of its closely watched 'Doomsday Clock' to reflect growing concerns about a 'Second Nuclear Age' marked by worsening threats, including: nuclear ambitions in Iran and North Korea, unsecured nuclear materials in Russia and elsewhere, the continuing 'launch-ready' status of 2,000 of the 25,000 nuclear weapons held by the U.S. and Russia, escalating terrorism, and new pressure from climate change for expanded civilian nuclear power that could increase proliferation risks. This is the first time that climate change has been factored into an adjustment of the hands of the clock.

    A Deluge Of Dalmatians
There aren't quite a 101 of them but for new mum Pebbles her 15 Dalmatian puppies are more than enough.

Pebble's owner Kay Sullivan was left shocked when her pet pooch gave birth to the huge litter - double the average number.

Unsurprisingly, the birth left two-and-half-year old Pebbles so exhausted that Kay, her husband Neil and their daughter Cerys had to step in to lend a helping hand.

Kay, from Carmarthenshire in Wales, comments: "We had to care for them for two days because Pebbles was not very well. She was very weak because they had taken all the energy out of her".

And thanks to their help all of the puppies have survived.

The family now have the task of coming up with names for all five males and ten females.

Newly christened is Patch and Phantom Of The Opera due to the fact half his face is black and the other white.

Their story has drawn parallels to the Disney film '101 Dalmatians' because 15 is the number of puppies stolen from Dalmatian parents Pongo and Perdy.

According to Kay, who is not a dog breeder, though they may keep one or two of the new arrivals they are looking to sell the rest.

Clocks That Will Start A Riot
A British artist has produced a range of extraordinary new clocks that capture the recent London riots in time.

Dominic Wilcox was inspired after witnessing first hand the looting that swept the capital city in August.

The 36-year-old from Hackney watched as a hooded youth ran off with a brand new television while armed police looked on.

And that scene has been recreated as part of Mr Wilcox's new fascinating collection of working timepieces, which are selling for GBP 500 pounds each.

That scene has been recreated as part of Dominic's new fascinating collection of working timepieces, which are selling for GBP 500 each.

In another of Dominic's quirky pieces a man is so engrossed in his iPhone he misses a bizarre balancing act in front of him.

Elsewhere a man offers his hand to shake but is continually rejected, while in another unusual watch the numbers swept away by a man with a broom.

Dominic said: "I thought about those moments when people pass each other or interact, like shaking hands or avoiding each other.

"I tend to do what most people do and observe everyday things. I then use these observations as inspiration for my work.

"I live in Hackney and while I was dodging the riots I remember seeing a hooded youth running away with a TV while the riot police looked on.

"I recreated that scene in a watch with a looter running around with a TV as police man stands on the minute hand.

"Another shows how people get so engrossed in their phones while walking down the street they are oblivious to everything around them.

"It highlights that situation with an extreme balancing act going around and around while a man stares at his iphone".

Dominic uses vintage mechanical wind up watches, found in antique shops or on the internet, as a base.

The Camel Who Came To Breakfast
It's not every day you can say that a camel has shared your breakfast - unless you're Nathan and Charlotte Anderson-Dixon.

Each morning they and their 18-month-son Reuben are joined by pet camel Joe, who pokes his head through their conservatory window to help himself to something to eat.

The three-year-old happily munches eats bread, fruit and cereal plucked from the table at the family's detached country farmhouse.

Joe, who measures 17.5 hands, loves bananas on toast but hates toast with cheese or Marmite.

He lives with four other camels but is the only one to share breakfast with his owners.

The others have to eat hay, barley, straw and corn mix in their stable in Ashbourne, Derbyshire.

Nathan, 32, has owned Joe for two years and uses him for camel racing.

He said: "The first time Joe joined us for breakfast he was uninvited. He leaned in and rudely helped himself to the fruit bowl.

"But I wasn't surprised because he's very good at persuading all the other animals to give him their food too.

"Now he comes over most mornings and hovers around in anticipation.

"He is like a big soft giant teddy bear and has become part of the family.

"We open the window and he puts his head through to take bread and fruit from the table.

"His favourite treat is banana on toast but he turns his nose up at bread with cheese or Marmite.

"Joe is like a big brother to Reuben.

"Reuben thinks it's quite normal to sit and have breakfast with a camel.

"He likes riding ponies and it won't be long until he is riding Joe."

Nathan, who runs a company that hires out animals for special events, joked: "Despite his regular visits, Joe hasn't mastered a knife and fork yet."

Mouse Makes Clean Getaway From Cat
Here's one mouse that's extremely squeaky clean.

The unfortunate rodent was attempting to escape a predatory cat when it ended up in an even worse situation.

It is thought that the tiny creature took cover under a sofa in Michael Buck's home in Hellesdon, Norwich after being chased by his cat.

With the mouse unable to make a clean getaway and the cat unable to reach its prey a stalemate was reached.

That is until an oblivious Michael decided to do a little vacuuming, which included attacking the dust beneath his sofa.

Unbeknownst to Michael, his spring clean saw the mini mouse sucked up into the machine and into the dust chamber.

He only realised what had happened when he saw his cat taking an unusual interest in the hoover and took a closer look.

Dusty the mouse, as he has now been called, was promptly liberated, apparently unharmed by his ordeal.

He has now been installed in a deluxe cage of his own and is being cared for by Michael.
