The Schoolboy Who Stops Breathing Every Time He Goes To Sleep
A schoolboy who stops breathing every time he falls asleep has defied all of the odds to make it to the age of 11.

Liam Derbyshire suffers from a rare condition called central hypoventilation, also known as Ondine's Curse, which means he stops breathing whenever he nods off.

When he was first diagnosed doctors predicted that he wouldn't live past the age of six weeks.

However, Liam, who has to be plugged into a ventilator every time his parents kiss him goodnight, has proven the gloomy predictions wrong.

Over the years his parents, from Gosport, Hants, have spent thousands on electricity bills for his vital equipment, which keeps him alive at night.

They have installed emergency lighting in case of a power cut at night and Liam also has a battery operated ventilator in case he falls asleep in the car or on a plane.

In order to use the equipment Liam has to permanently wear a tracheotomy breathing tube in his throat.

Meanwhile, a special carer keeps watch over him at night so that his parents can sleep.

Alongside the hypoventilation, Liam is in remission from cancer that he had as a young child.

He was also born with Hirschsprung's disease, which means he has damage to the nerve endings in his bowel so he digests food extremely quickly.

Due to this he has to eat huge amounts regularly and the family often spend GBP 700 a month on food in order to satisfy his extraordinary appetite.

Liam's mum Kim, 50, said: "Every day the doctors are amazed at how fit he is. He has defied all the odds.

"We have been very fortunate with Liam that he has had the life that he's got.

"We always wanted him to have as normal a life as we could give him. He's exceeded all expectations.

"We have to keep a very close eye on him. He goes fro...

Richard Austin's 2010 'Animal Magic' calendar, Britain - Nov 2009
    A YEAR OF 'ANIMAL MAGIC'

A new calendar full of animal magic captures a host of cute creatures throughout the year.

Photographer Richard Austin is known as one of the best in the business at snapping unique animal images.

And he's gathered together just of a few of these for his 2010 'Animal Magic' Calendar.

This features a host of feathered, furred and hoofed animals braving the elements or making the most of the season.

In chilly January a pair of newborn lambs venture out in the snow wearing customised red plastic coats to keep them warm.

As the month of romance, February sees two mute swans creating the shape of a heart with their necks.

In March Lo the lamb gets a spring in her step as she explores some newly bloomed daffodils.

Eddie the Eagle Owl gives us all a wink in April, while a baby gosling peers out from amongst the garden flowers in May.

Lucy the Kune Kune pig sleeps in June after gorging herself on too many fermenting apples.

In July a rather menacing swan faces the camera full on, while a month on Bjorn the kitten takes it easy in a striped deckchair.

In September a harvest mouse nibbles on some tasty blackberries and a duckling takes a snooze amongst the falling leaves in October.

Meanwhile, a feisty zebra foal dashes through a stream in November.

As the year draws to a close a robin perches on a Christmas log in a picture perfect winter scene for December.

Fareeda, the white Bengal tiger with no stripes, at the Cango Wildlife Ranch in Oudshoorn, South Africa - 10 Jul 2009
THE PURE, WHITE TIGER BORN WITHOUT STRIPES

A rare pure white Bengal Tiger is set to take the world by storm with her snowy coat and blue eyes.

Fareeda is the first white tiger to be born in Africa and, even more unusually, was born without the stripes typical to her kind.

Her parents Geena and Shiva are both white Bengal tigers and carry the gene for white colouring.

The playful cub was born on Christmas day along with brother Shahir and sister Sitarah, both of whom are marked with normal black tiger stripes.

Due to this keepers at Cango Wildlife Ranch, near Cape Town, thought that Fareeda might develop her distinctive stripes as she grew older.

Cango Ranch PR and Marketing Manager, Odette Claassen said:

"When she was born, Fareeda had noticeably pale colour. It did cause a stir of excitement among the staff.

"But we knew there was the possibility of the cub's very light black and ginger stripes darkening over time existed."

However, at odds of 100 to one, now that she is six months old it is clear that Fareeda is set to stay icy white forever.

The young cub was largely hand-reared by keepers at the ranch.

Her adoptive 'mum' was Lisha the Labrador who, over the years, has played foster mother to more than 30 'orphans'.

Fareeda was bred as part of a unique breeding program aimed at keeping the White Bengal species alive.

It is estimated that there are less than 20 tigers like Fareeda alive in the world today.

"Most white Bengal tigers are bred in the US from a single male captured in India in the 1950s, but Fareeda is the first to be born in Africa, which is very special," Claassen added.

"My hope is that one day Fareeda and her kind can return to their nativ...

    Derek The Deer
    DEREK THE DEER

Derek the roe deer is one lucky buck.

The tiny young fawn was rescued and brought back from the brink of death after he was discovered by a woman walking her dog, lying under a bush and still inside his birth sack.

The newborn was then brought to the Secret World Wildlife rescue centre near Highbridge in Somerset, where carers nursed him back to health by feeding him with a syringe.

Abandoned by his mother, Derek would not have survived much longer had it not been for the kind intervention of passers-by and the Secret world staff.

Fawns rarely live long if not encouraged to get up and move by their mother immediately after birth; they also very tricky to feed properly.

After Derek has been weaned, the staff will gradually reduce human contact until they feel he is ready and equipped to tackle life on his own in the wild this autumn.

However, since he never made it out of his birth sack before being taken to the centre, Derek will have never seen another deer before, so life in the wild could be something of a culture shock for him.
